A gorgeous, bright and happy hat. The curves and flanges make it special, as do the contrasting cat poses.

Words cannot describe how amazing Juliane is. She was so willing to recreate a hood for me. She kept in perfect contact with me throughout the whole process. The hood turned out amazing and I couldn't be anymore satisfied with my purchase.

About

Wearable Art Hats for the Practical and Fantastical

Exciting News: I was just interviewed on CreativeRoom4Talk about creativity. Go and visit (but do come back) -- http://creativeroom4talk.com/interview-juliane-gorman/

WHO -
I first felted over thirty years ago, as a student at the Rhode Island School of Design. It was an extracurricular, haphazard affair, where I danced and threw snow upon the fibers. Not at all like the structured weaving that had drawn me to textiles. Then, for my senior year I made a series of sculptural headdresses out of painted silk, paper and metal. But, felt was not among the materials; they weren't practical hats. A few years later, I studied how to make proper hats under esteemed millinery teacher, Ann Albrizio at Fashion Institute of Technology.

However, for many years the magic of felt and hats lay dormant in me. Then, serendipitously I borrowed a book from the library on felting hats: Chad Alice Hagen's "Fabulous Felt Hats." It was My FeltHappiness Eureka Epiphany moment, where my textile love of colors and fibers, mixed with my passion for hats!

WHAT -
Wool a natural fiber with enchanted properties. Imagine, it resists fire and water, yet is renewable and sustainable. It comes alive in my hands with every piece I create. A transformation occurs as I knead and massage the fibers into a strong and flexible fabric, and then shape this fabric into wearable art.

The most amazing thing about felt is it creates life within me. Ideas bloom, upon more ideas. Some ideas are fueled by technical challenges, while others are based on shape, color or emotion. It truly invigorates me!

HOW -
Each hat starts from soft Merino wool roving which I layer around a flexible resist. Usually there are 4 or 5 layers of fiber, with added decoration of other natural fibers such as wool, bamboo, silk fibers. Then, comes the felt-making, where I add a bit of gentle soap, warm water, and pressure. After patting, rolling and throwing, the fibers interlock and felt together to become fabric. There is a lot of exercise in felt-making! No fancy machines or petite elves do the work.

My handcrafted felt is draped, shaped and dried on my trusty millinery hat block. Some of my hats have millinery wire hand sewn in to keep their brims perky. Many of them will have millinery grosgrain ribbon sewn inside the headsize for that professional finish. Lastly, I trim and decorate each hat to bring out the best in the hat & You.

Each of my felted hats tells a story - imagine each one with its own Fairy Tale. If you see a hat that you like, but want it in another color, size, or mood, I will happily try to create one. Please bear in mind, each hat is a one of a kind piece of wearable art, just like You!

All items are ready to ship - really!

WHERE -
After living in 10 years in Norwich (UK), a lovely town with lots of Medieval character, I've recently moved back to the USA - Gibsonia, PA. It's a place with lots of trees and wildlife and is of course quite beautiful. I look forward to continuing my feltmaking practice in America.

Sizing details

Head size:
Every head has its own unique size and shape which can be measured with a flexible tape measure, or even a piece of string.

Take the tape measure and encircle your head, just above top of ears. Make sure that the tape measure goes over that small bump at the back of your head. Please don't pull it tightly. Leave a little 'ease' so that one finger can fit under the tape. An ear to ear measure can be helpful too.

Measure 3 times: it is surprising how it can vary!
Inches or centimetres is fine.
