It all began with a fabric brooch....

As a young 16 year old, I had a great love of art, but had no idea or direction.
Straight from school, I had never had the chance to study art, so applied for GCSE Art at college. After looking through my limited portfolio, the kind lady, who became one of my tutors said she would give me a two week trial.....at AS Level Art and Design...a big suprise for me!

While studying this course, another teacher arrived on the scene...and suddenly a new world was opened to me......that of TEXTILES................

Every day the love of this new world that had been opened up to me grew. I wanted more and more.....and thats where the fabric brooch came in.

I began to make small "Suffolk Puff" style fabric brooches, which were ok, but looking back, very rough around the edges. But whilst on holiday in the Lake District, I ventured into a beautiful art gallery, and began talking to the owner. I happened to mention that I made brooches, and with (alot) of encouragement from my proud and lovely mother, (who was brandishing her fabric suffolk puff brooch, that I had just made her for my parents wedding anniversary!) I began to talk about my textile work etc. The owner expressed great interest, and mentioned they were looking for a Felt Maker to make items such as brooches for their gallery. 'Had I ever made felt before' the owner asked me....

My reply (remembering to a limited extent, that I had at least encountered what wool roving looked like before.....) was a resounding YES!

So thats how it began....suddenly a few weeks later, I found myself at the same gallery; with a box of my newly made creations.........

From that point onwards, my work has grown, to become alot more defined and polished....but there's always work to do, and areas to work on.

I now make bags, brooches, earrings, necklaces and scarves, which all incorporate wool roving and felt in some way or other.

This is along with lots of other areas of Textiles that I enjoy; such as Artisan Doll Making, and creative machine and hand embroidery.

It all began with a little bit of support, a few encouraging comments, a fabric brooch and a supportive set of parents to always fall back on.....

Its slow progress, but every chink of light, is a step forward.

Don't give up what you love, even if you make it, just for the love and to keep sane!
