About

Handmade in Salt Lake City

The Land of Salt is led by myself, Erica Richardson & my boyfriend Nicholas Hoggan. We specialize in crystal and gemstone jewelry, metalsmithing, and stained glass terrariums.

Nick brings his impressive collection of dad jokes, great love of hot sauce, and amazing stained glass skills to the team. I manage the rest of the shop operations including design and assembly of jewelry, photography, and management of the online shop.

We are both born and raised in Salt Lake, and take huge pride in our city. We try and source as many of our materials locally as possible. When we aren't busy crafting away, we may be found riding our bikes, stuffing our faces at a local eatery, and enjoying the crazy antics of our French Bulldog, Jack.

Shipping
All items are carefully packaged and shipped via USPS first class mail. We try to send all items out within 2 weeks of payment, however, it may take longer depending on the item. During busy times such as Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Valentines Day, our lead time is closer to 3 weeks. We know this is a long time to wait, but as this is still our side job, we can only work in the evenings and on weekends. We appreciate your patience and hope our pieces are worth the wait.

International packages can sometimes take several weeks to a month to arrive at their destinations.

We are not responsible for extra fees incurred at customs and/or import taxes. Due to import duty valuation adjustments and currency valuations, we can't provide an estimate for duty or VAT.

Please remember that all international packages will be marked with the accurate purchase price on all customs forms

Replacements for damaged items are accepted within 10 days of the purchase date for U.S. addresses and 20 days for international orders.
Additional policies and FAQs
We have recently introduced copper electroplated items into our lineup. Here's a little bit of information you should know.

▲ Electroplating Process ▲
Electroplating is the process of using a controlled electrical current to deposit a thin layer of metal from an anode onto another conductive object. It is typically a 12 hour (or longer) process, and requires careful monitoring and preparation work. Electroplating opens up a whole new world of jewelry making than traditional metalsmithing due to its ability to coat uneven surfaces and even organic materials.

▲ Care and Maintenance ▲
To maintain its finish, avoid prolonged exposure to water (swimming, shower...). Also avoid contact with harsh cleaners or tarnish removers. A natural oxidation of the copper will occur after repeated wear. Your item can easily be polished back up with a jewelry polishing cloth unless it has be coated with a varnish (see greening). These are the ones I like to use: http://www.riogrande.com/Category/Tools-and-Equipment/120/Polishing-and-Finishing/118/Polishing-Cloths/4674/Sunshine-Cloth/4678

▲ Patina (Blackened Rings) ▲
Some of my rings have been treated with Liver of Sulfur. It is a surface treatment / patina and will wear in time. Keeping the surface free of excessive water will help preserve the finish. The exposed copper will darken and oxidize with continuous use to a beautiful, natural patina.

▲ Greening ▲
This doesn't happen to all people, but for some, copper turns their fingers green or greyish. When a ring turns your finger green/grey it's either because of a chemical reaction between acids in your skin and the metal of the ring or a reaction between another substance on your hand, such as a lotion, and the metal of the ring. Greening is not harmful and can be removed with non-gel toothpaste. If you are concerned with greening, I can apply a clear varnish on the ring upon request.
