Scratching the Surface

Hi everyone, I'm Kerry Kennedy, the owner of Fire Horse Pottery, and a resident potter at The Kentuck Art Center in Northport, Alabama.
I feel more than fortunate to be able to do what I love for a living. Now don't get me wrong, I enjoy all forms of art, but I love pottery most of all. I have been a potter since 1996, and specialize in ceramic creations inspired by medieval and renaissance pottery forms . Some are direct reproductions, but most only use the forms as a direction, creating new art with old techniques.
One of my favorite concentrations is the use of sgraffito, or "scratched" art, a technique of decoration prepared by applying a thick layer of contrasting slip over the clay and then combing or scribing the overlaid slip with a prepared tool to reveal the clay underneath. This technique has been used since ancient times and was common during the middle ages. With the help of my husband, Joe, we often take the technique further, creating our own designs and patterns, whether from historical inspiration or anything else that can be illustrated.

FIre Horse Pottery is located in Northport, Alabama at the Kentuck Art Center. I've been doing pottery since '96, and made it my full-time job in 2003, when I started my business in Tuscaloosa. I am fortunate to make my living doing what I love most, and I hope that love shows in forms that I throw. We went through a bit of a rough spot after the tornado, but things are getting back to normal. Check back often for new listings!
