Announcement   Welcome to Five and Nineteen Blackbirds. This shop began as a mother-daughter store of paper dolls, drawings, lithographic prints, paper crafts, and several versions of thaumatropes! For several years health issues limited Jackie's participation in the business, so I, her husband, Ron, handled the day to day operations. Jackie passed away September 4, 2016, and with her much of the inspiration for the operation of the business. There was some doubt as to whether the partnership would go on, but it has been decided that the shop will continue into 2017 as a father-daughter store. As it has always been, the designs are by my daughter, Megan, and production and packaging will continue to be done by myself. We appreciate your interest in our creations.

About

A Love of Paper and All Things Magical

The idea for Five and Nineteen Blackbirds was first had by Megan Wampler when (weary from art school and commercial graphic design clients) she was flipping through the collection of paper doll books her mom had bought for her throughout her childhood and suddenly realized... "Oh, I could design my OWN dolls and be happy making art again!"

This thought was swifty followed by two more thoughts, "I know nothing about business licenses and taxes..." and "I'm too flaky and distracted to respond to customers in a timely fashion." So Megan went to the woman who had started the paper doll obsession two decades earlier and a mother-daughter partnership was born.

Megan draws the dolls and painstakingly designs every detail of fabric and hair and tiny paper accessories (all while watching countless episodes of HBO shows and Netflix), and Jackie handles the day to day of thanking customers and making sure everyone loves their dolls (as well as all the business and tax stuff that Megan would rather die a thousand deaths than attempt to understand).

Business has doubled every year, and inventory keeps growing because everyone loves making and having beautiful paper dolls. They are a fragile and beautiful reminder of a time long gone.
