The Art of FlagMaking

I have been a professional custom flag and banner maker since 1982. It is truly an art and I feel so passionate about both the work I do and all of the wonderful people I have met over the years who have inspired me. I owned and operated a flag shop called Flying Colors Ltd. on Thames Street in Newport, Rhode Island for nearly fourteen years. My daughter, Zera, grew up working in our family business. We had a retail store that serviced homeowners, businesses, the America's Cup teams, hundreds of boaters, both power and sail as well as many of the US Navy ships stationed there.

Fast forward to 2007 and to Seattle, Washington and the revival of our business through the internet. Many of our old customers, who became part of the family in Newport, can once again hoist their flags. Our new customers are just as thrilled to have found such a treasure. Take a look at some of the amazing custom work I have had the pleasure and honor of making, it may inspire your own creativity. Have some fun and send in your ideas, I am open and willing to help create your work of art. We have always been known for the quality of our workmanship and customer service and if anything it has improved over the years. I look forward to working with you!

Care instructions

People often ask how long a flag should last and the answer is, "it all depends". Flags can last one day in a hurricane wind or many years with proper care. Weather plays a major factor in the life of a flag as well as where it is flown from and how often. Wind, water, and sun all work together to lessen the life of a flag. It is best to take it down at night and during foul weather. It is also important to hand wash it in mild detergent occasionally to help prevent pollutants and dirt from weakening the fabric. Hang the flag so that it dries completely before folding or storing it. And at the first sign of fraying, have the end-repaired before further damage is done.
