Art and Nature, a Beautiful Combination

Hello and welcome!

I've loved both art and nature since I was a little girl. I spent my youth drawing, painting, and catching frogs, snakes, and salamanders. When I was 5, I even managed to catch an adult barn swallow with a butterfly net! (Don't worry, it was released unharmed!)

By the time I went to college, at Penn State University (Altoona Campus) I had decided to pursue art and become a comic book illustrator. I took art and photography classes. I was learning and having fun. There was one little problem, though. Nature kept beckoning...I had to be outside! I ended up graduating with two degrees, one in Integrative Arts, the other in Environmental Studies, and after college I took my first field job as a nest searcher in West Virginia.

Currently, I work seasonally as a wildlife biologist. Birds have been the primary focus of my work, but I have participated in projects with snakes, bats, rodents, plants, mule deer, and mountain lions, too. Working with wildlife has given me the opportunity to see some amazing places and animals.

I haven't given up my artistic side. I almost always have a camera or sketchbook on me. I like to take my experiences in the field and translate them into art. The animals in my paintings and drawings are from photos and sketches I have taken in the field. Depending on my mood, I create pieces that are realistic, impressionistic, or abstract. I like bright colors, contrast, and texture. My favorite mediums include acrylic, pen and ink, watercolor, and colored pencil. I've been experimenting recently with lino prints, alcohol inks, polymer clay, and needle felting.

Some of my favorite artists: Vincent Van Gogh, Claude Monet, Frida Kahlo, Georges Seurat, Leonard Knight, David Sibley, and John Muir Laws.

Some of my favorite photographers: Jim Brandenburg, Ansel Adams
