Note from shop owner IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT!!! The Flotsam Furniture Works is on hiatus!!! In order to catch up on the ever expanding backlog of work that's currently threatening to overtake the workshop, I'm taking a small pause here on Etsy. With the one-man sweatshop operating at full capacity, I should be able to resurface sometime mid-December, so be sure to check back. Thanks for your patience!

Perfect - exactly as pictured and just what we were looking for. Excellent workmanship with both wood and upholstery. Very personal customer service. Look forward to ordering other items when the shop reopens!

Beautifully crafted. A piece of art. Lightweight, but solid. We are very pleased with the purchase. It was completed on time and shipped promptly.

I love my bench! The workmanship and fabric quality are great. There was a slight delay because a tree fell onto the studio and they had to find new space (so a delay was more than understandable), but the seller contacted me immediately to let me know and offered free shipping to compensate.

About

Custom modern furnishings handmade in Portland, Oregon

My name is Nick Sario, and I created The Flotsam Furniture Works out of a thoughtfully cultivated fusion of single-minded obsession and wild desperation.

At the time this all began, home was a drafty Chicago apartment furnished almost entirely by hand-me-downs from my roommate’s grandmother. We were grateful to have any furnishings at all, but it was a bit odd living in an apartment that appeared to have been decorated by an eighty year old woman circa 1975. Neither of us could afford anything new, so as the furniture began to very literally break down beneath us, I took it upon myself to peel back the faded gold velour and make repairs. Things evolved quickly after that. Arcane looking upholstery tools began cluttering the apartment, then taking over entire rooms. The porch was commandeered for woodworking while the dining room was repurposed for sewing and upholstery. Before long I was buying supplies in bulk and recovering third-hand chairs just to learn how they’d been assembled.

The growing industry in my apartment was a stark counterpoint to my day job. I was temping as a data entry clerk after losing two positions to the recession, and the daily reminder that I was almost thirty and my only marketable skill was apparently my speed at the numeric ten-key left me feeling a singular mixture of restlessness, self-doubt, and terror. I was desperate for some kind of radical course correction, some way to orient myself away from the pursuit of a paycheck and toward the pursuit of skills, some means to prove that despite the years of mundane repetition I could still muster in myself the tiniest bit of craft and grace, and thus The Flotsam Furniture Works was born.

Nick is the official hand-maker behind the FFWs handmade goods. If something's gone wrong, this is the name you should be muttering under your breath.

My name is Nick Sario, and The Flotsam Furniture Works is the product of my humble and earnest efforts. I endeavor to create distinctive furniture while incorporating reclaimed and recycled materials whenever possible. Each piece represents a motley collection of the new and used. Whether it’s an original design utilizing resawn salvaged barn beams in the frame construction, or a castoff chair that’s been stripped to the springs and rebuilt, each piece is made with as much consideration for the source of materials as for how they’re used in the final product. Aside from creating what you see in the shop, I also personally reply to your convo's and emails, package your purchases, and ship or hand deliver them to your door. If you have any questions, be they regarding the joinery of a chair frame or the shipping insurance on your purchase, I’d be more than happy to answer them.
