About

Soul, story, statement & slow fashion

Hello there. My name is Deborah. I am the designer and maker behind Flotsam & Jetsum. I specialise in making slow fashion statement pieces from eco-friendly reclaimed and vintage materials.
Flotsam & Jetsum is in a state of flux as I simplify my store to carry a line of sustainable upcycled clutch bags, scarves and unique ceramic jewellery full of character.

My ethos is live intentionally.
Live with only what I love, need and use.
My form follows function mentality means I think out my raw material choice and design so they will perform for maximum sustainability.
Only great quality vintage fabrics and the highest quality interlinings are used.
I like to finish my pieces as beautifully as is possible and think through their daily use and wear to make them user friendly.

My studio is a little room in our classic 'Queenslander' home here in a small regional Queensland town, Australia.
I am one of those mad nutty types who grows her own wheatgrass and whose kitchen is a bubbling concoction of cultured foods.
I've ditched fast fashion, support eco-fashion and thrift stores to recycle what I am too lazy to make.
My 'making' style is unschooled, self-taught, organic and free form.

I come from a long line of creative types.
My mother's family escaped the Russian revolution in 1918 and eventually settled in Australia, poor as church mice, but with minds rich in inventiveness.
Mum's family is full of seamstresses.
Grandma would sew her daughter's dresses and then proceed to make a dress for herself from all the scraps.
Maybe I've inherited the gene, hey?

I adore the challenge of seeing the potential in the overlooked and reinventing it into something that will be loved for years to come.
My ideas are like shells, pummeled in the ebb and flow of the tide.
Eventually, they settle on the shore, but not before being reworked in my mind many times over.
Yup, slow fashion at it's best!
so....welcome to Flotsam & Jetsum...

Accepted payment methods

  • Accepts Etsy gift cards
Payment
Please pay within 3 days of agreeing to purchase an item.
Paypal, direct debit, credit card are all available.

Overseas buyers
Please be informed that you are responsible for any and all charges that importing merchandise might incur, such as duties and customs charges.
Shipping
++ Postal charges ++ Postal charges are those specified by Australia Post with a little added for packaging and handling. Small postal items will be sent 'Priority' shipping, unless otherwise specified.

++ Postage with another item ++ When combining postage one item will be at full price postage and the other will be for the lesser amount. These combination amounts are for parcels 500g and under. If the combination is over 500g I will need to provide you with a quote, however most things I make should be able to be combined under 500g. The price increase will only be that charged by Aust Post for the additional weight.

++ Australia only ++
If you require express or registered post, please convo me prior to purchase. I will need to change the invoice you receive if you require additional services. I do combine postage for items but will provide a price on a case by case basis. Please contact me if you have questions. I am happy to help.

++ Overseas ++
I only send items overseas using Australia Post standard air mail. The cost of registered mail is very prohibitive, but if you wish to have something sent registered post or express I'm happy to alter the invoice prior to payment. Please convo me prior to purchase.
Refunds and Exchanges
100% customer satisfaction is my aim. What I require of you my dear customer, is that you approach me first, before leaving feedback, so that we can resolve any issues to your satisfaction.
Happy to refund for:
Any mistakes in my assembling the piece that totally compromise the use of the item.
I am happy to make partial refunds for smaller defects.
You will be offered a choice of return, repair, replace (if possible) or partial or full refund.
I am happy to do this for 6 months from the date you receive the item.
I do not compensate for damage to the item because of failure to follow the care instructions, attached with each item.
At rare times small jump links (in my vintage jewelry) may be stretched and open.
Please contact me if this happens as mostly they can be squeezed together and the item repaired without the need to go through the expense of returning the item.
Please contact me if you are not sure and there has been a problem with the item.

I will not refund for: change of mind, items that have been dropped, treated roughly, or normal wear and tear (ie metals tarnishing with age etc).

I will refund the return cost of postage once a receipt has been provided proving the item has been lodged using tracking post. I do not pay for the postage return upfront without proof of it being posted. Again, any questions please ask - I'd like to provide fair customer service.

Vintage fabric and heirloom doilies
I go to considerable lengths to choose vintage fabric that will provide you with many years of use. However, the fabric is vintage and will require special care from its owner. If you believe that an item has not provided you with a reasonable length of use or you have some other concern regarding it's longevity, please always contact me, as I would very much like to make sure you are happy with an item.

If in time, after normal wear and tear, you require the replacement of a doily please contact me as I will be happy to assist you in this regard. While I cannot cover the cost of postage to and from me, I will be happy to replace the doily at minimal cost. Each case will be judged on its own merits.
Additional policies and FAQs
Repairs
At times accidents may happen with your item. In this instance I am happy to assist with repair of an item wherever possible. The customer will need to cover the cost of postage to and from me. Where applicable there may also be costs incurred with replacement of some materials within an item. Each case will be judged on it's own merits, but I would very much like to provide you with a fair service that helps you to once again use and enjoy your item. Please contact me for more details.

I make costume jewellery and do not use real gold, silver etc. Items will need to be wiped with wet cloth after use if you wish to prolong the finish. Personally, I think use gives an item the 'lived in' feel and adds to its warmth and character. This is not a fault. I use new and recycled pieces. Recycled pieces may not be picture perfect. Again, this is not a fault but is designed to add vintage character to a piece. It also helps our environment!
