About

Flowers And The Moon - Custom Shoe Shop and Other Art

"With Freedom, Books, Flowers and the Moon, who could not be happy?"

The name of my shop comes from Oscar Wilde's iconic novel written in prison. It encapsulates my belief that it takes very little to make a happy life, and the things I love I love passionately. Many of my shop's themes may be found in that quote as well.

I love art. Everything about it. I am passionate about creating, and perfecting every detail of a piece, but what I love most is making something beautiful that I know will be used and seen. The idea that art should be experienced by as many people as possible, that it should be used and should be a part of your whole life, is what led me to begin painting shoes, first for myself, and then for everyone. Art is a huge part of my life and Maybe I can help make it part of yours.

My shop opened in 2015. I specialize in custom, hand-painted shoes and jewelry. Each item is made to order and painted with the utmost care. I have years of training in art, so you can rest assured that your item, no matter how complex, will turn out just the way you want it! I have a Bachelor's degree in Visual Arts from the University of California - San Diego, where I focused on drawing and painting, though I also have a background in sculpture, jewelry-making, scratchboard, screen printing, and other types of art. I have been selling my art for more than 15 years.

All my shoes are canvas and entirely synthetic. For most designs, I begin with a layer of gesso to smooth the canvas. I then draw your design on in graphite by hand. For paint, I use a mixture of acrylic paint and a fabric additive to increase the durability of the design. When the artwork is complete and dry, it is sprayed with two coats of clear matte finish to protect the paint and make the shoes easier to clean.

In addition to custom shoes and jewelry, I also offer a number of original pieces - drawings, paintings, gallery-quality prints, postcard prints, and scratchboard.

I accept all custom orders! If you're looking for a design that is all your own, I can paint any design on a shoe for you, in any style, in any color. And if you see something you like but would like it a little different, just let me know. All my shoes are made to order, so you can choose any design, any color, on a variety of brands, including Vans and Converse.

I'm constantly coming out with new designs. If you like my art, follow me on Etsy to see my new products as they become available. You can also follow me on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook to see my art that isn't available here.

My toddler and I wear the prototypes of all my designs and can personally vouch that they are comfortable (I am on my feet the entire day) and durable (they can withstand rain, mud, rivers, and some serious spills).

A tiny bit about me: I'm a vegan artist and only use vegan products, paints, and brushes. I spend a couple days a week as a nurse to critical animals in an emergency room, much of my time keeping up with an energetic toddler, some of my time keeping up with my house full of cats and birds (three cats, one bird, to be exact), and the rest of my time designing and painting custom shoes and other art.

Please visit my shop policies for information about shipping, returns, and the answers to other common questions, or message me through Etsy if you have any additional questions.

Thanks!

Megan

Can I really wear the shoes?

Yes! My shoes are painted with durable, high-quality acrylic paint mixed with a fabric additive. Once dry, the shoes receive two coats of a clear protective matte finish to make them even easier to clean.

The shoes can be worn in the rain and snow, but if they get fairly wet, it's best to let the shoe fully dry before wearing again (which is advised to extend the life of any shoe, painted or not).

My young daughter wears her painted shoes ALL the time - in the mud, through puddles, in the rain. If they can withstand a toddler, they'll hold up on anyone. She outgrows her shoes before they wear out.

If your shoes get dirty, wipe them gently with a clean, damp cloth, and the soles can be scrubbed with soap.

What are the standard shoes?

In my shop I sell standard shoes, Vans, and Converse. The standard shoes look similar to the slip on Vans, but they are a less expensive store brand. They are available in both men's and women's whole sizes. Most of my listings feature images of standard shoes. If you are unsure of which you're ordering or which you see in the images in the listings, just ask.

Environmental Considerations

I care about the environment as much as all of you! If the outside packaging sometimes looks a little messy, it's because ALL my packaging is reused. My shop (and the rest of my home) is also now run entirely on solar power!

Drafts/Mock Up for Customer Approval

I can not provide drafts or mock ups of shoe designs for free. It is not a part of my work process - I draw directly onto the shoes, which I only purchase after an order has been placed - and it would take additional hours of work that are not factored into the price of the shoes. You can, however, purchase a draft/mock up, either before you purchase your shoes, or at the same time, for $20 per draft. Multiple drafts may increase processing time. Drafts are unfinished and hand-drawn only. Drafts can not be drawn on shoes because erasing is not possible. Once shoes are painted, they can not be repainted because the paint becomes too thick and will crack with use.

No changes can be made once an order is placed

The above item addresses this, but I would like to underscore this policy: I do not automatically send images of finished products to buyers prior to shipping. If you would like an image of your shoes prior to shipping, you must specifically request this, and I will accomodate your request if it is within reason. Under no circumstances can changes be made once an order to submitted. I can not spend hours of extra time and more importantly, if too much paint is applied to the shoes (which repainting would necessitate) the shoes would readily crack and flake with use.
