Un diminuto solario en Boston convertido en garaje de servicio... ¡ha sido una aventura!

Ha sido todo un viaje. Flutter Letterpress se llamaba Blush Design Studio y empezó hace mucho tiempo, en una pequeña ciudad a las afueras de Boston, en junio de 2009, con una chica con una carrera muy ocupada, un marido que aguantaba todas sus travesuras, un gran danés llamado Atticus y un regalo de bodas que cambiaría la vida de todos...
Hablo de Gable con mis amigos como si mi esposo y yo hubiéramos adoptado a un bebé saltarín, pero la realidad es que Gable tiene 61 años y requiere más amor y atención que mi gran danés Atticus, que nunca ha aprendido a hacer sus necesidades; bueno, ya está un poco acostumbrado a hacer sus necesidades; Gable, quiero decir. Gable, llamado así por Clark Gable, es una prensa tipográfica de platina Chandler & Price, fundida en hierro puro, que pesa casi 600 kg. Desde luego, no es un niño saltarín, sino más bien un dios estático. Mi esposo me regaló a Gable como regalo de bodas (sí, de verdad...), quien sabía más de mi amor y pasión por una salida creativa que nadie en este mundo. Qué tonto, porque a finales de 2010, me picó la curiosidad y rescaté otra prensa. Lo que pensé que era un Chandler & Price de 10x15 (esto se refiere al tamaño de la parte central de la prensa, la platina o el área imprimible), resultó ser un increíble bohemouth de 12x18, literalmente tres veces más grande que Gable. Lo llamamos Beau y debutará en papel en el estudio de impresión a principios de 2014.
No debería sorprender a nadie que las propiedades sean muy caras en Boston, Massachusetts, y cuando solo pudimos prescindir de un pequeño solario para mi estudio de impresión, me encantó la idea. Era pequeño. De unos 3 metros cuadrados. Pero nos las arreglamos. Y con "arreglárnoslas" me refiero a que tuvimos que subir a Gable con una grúa a su sitio a través de una ventana del solario... solo después de tener que reforzar tres veces el suelo. ¡Guau!
Hoy, mi estudio de impresión es un garaje de servicio integrado en nuestra nueva casa en North Raleigh, Carolina del Norte. Nos encanta este lugar; es nuestro hogar y donde mi esposo y yo nos conocimos hace muchísimos años.
Un poco más sobre mí: Soy una chica llamada Liz. Una chica a la que le encanta el papel. Soy de Maryland, Florida, Carolina del Norte y Georgia, y actualmente vivo en Carolina del Norte con mi esposo, mi cachorro y mi hija Isabella (Bells para abreviar, o Trouble Maker, o Boo, o Silly Girl cuando llega el momento). Mi gusto es algo vintage con un toque de rock and roll; mi esposo lo llamaría "gitano", y siempre tengo flores frescas a mi alrededor. Tengo formación en marketing de la Universidad de Carolina del Norte y he trabajado en el mundo corporativo de ventas de software (¡es fascinante!). Cuando no estoy imprimiendo, me pueden encontrar jugando al aire libre con mi esposo y mi hermosa bebé, cocinando, renovando nuestra nueva casa en Carolina del Norte y corriendo con Atticus, el danés saltarín. ¡De verdad, salta!
It's been a journey. Flutter Letterpress used to be named Blush Design Studio and started way back when in a small city outside of Boston, June 2009, with a busy career girl, a husband who put up with all her antics, a great-dane named Atticus, and a wedding present that would change everyones life...
I speak of Gable to my friends as if my husband and I adopted a bouncing baby boy, but the reality is that Gable is 61 years old and requires more love and attention than my never-house-trained Great Dane, Atticus; okay, he's a little house trained now- Gable, that is. Gable, named after Clark Gable, is a Chandler & Price platen letterpress machine, cast in pure iron and weighs nearly 1300lbs. He’s certainly no bouncing boy- more like a stationary god. I was given Gable as a wedding present from my Husband {yeah, really...}, who knew more about my love and passion for a creative outlet than anyone else in this world. What a silly man, because in late 2010, I got an itch and rescued another press. What I thought was a Chandler & Price 10x15 {this refers to the size of the middle portion of the press, the platen or the printable area}, turned out to be an incredible 12x18 bohemouth and quite literally 3 times the size of Gable. We've named him Beau, and he'll be making his paper debut in the printing studio in early 2014.
It should come as a surprise to no one that property is very expensive in Boston, MA and when we could ONLY spare a small little sunroom for my printing studio, I jumped at the idea. It was small. Like 10ft square kind of small. But we made do. And by 'made do' I mean that we had to crane Gable into his spot through a window of the sunroom...only after having to triple reinforce the flooing in there. Woof.
Today, my print studio is a utility garage built onto our new home in North Raleigh, North Carolina. We love it here- it's home for us, and where my husband and I met so many, many, (many) years ago.
A little more about me: I am just a girl named Liz. Just a girl who happens to love paper. I'm from MD, FL, NC, GA and currently reside in NC with my husband, pup, and daughter, Isabella {Bells for short, or Trouble Maker, or Boo, or Silly Girl when the moment strikes}. My taste is somewhat vintage with a dabble of rock and roll-- my husband would call it 'gypsy,' and I must have fresh flowers around me. I have a background in marketing from UNC and have worked in the corporate world of software sales {it's fascinating!}. When I'm not printing, you can find me playing outside with my husband and beautiful baby girl, cooking, updating our new home in North Carolina, and running outside with Atticus the prancing dane. Really, he prances.
