Folkloriikka, Finnish (n) Folklore (The study of folklore)
Simone Toerien began designing jewellery in 2013 and soon after launched Folkloriikka, a line of hand carved jewellery pieces inspired by moonlit woodlands, dreamlike ethereal landscapes and ancient folktales, passed intimately between centuries.
The word, Folkloriikka, is Finnish for “the study of folklore”. Simone chose it to represent both her love of Scandinavian design and her fascination with myths, tales and folklore. With each piece she aims to bring these stories to life by spending a wealth of time carving and etching the intricate details, before they are cast in sterling silver or bronze.
Simone works from her home studio in Onrus River, South Africa.
Around the web
I started Folkloriikka as an outlet for all the ideas that I had built up during my career as a web designer. I left my job, began a jewellery course, and those days spent dreaming about the outdoors became the inspiration for my nature and folktale pieces. Now I design, create, manage admin and shipping for my small, but growing, business.
