Announcement   Welcome to FollyandGlee's vintage barkcloth lampshade and lighting online shop.

I've been away from Etsy for a while to get back on my feet after breast cancer and now I have so much to show you.

We tailor every lampshade, and craft every lamp, from our studio at the foot of the South Downs near Lewes in the UK. Do come and visit if you are in the area. Why not bring along that old lamp for a re-wire and a re-vamped lampshade?

Find out more on our about page.

About

The Barkcloth Lady

I stumbled upon lampshade making through my love of vintage textiles towards the end of a corporate career in management research and consultancy. After mastering my first shade there was no turning back and Folly&Glee was established in 2010 with a mission to design and make lighting with a funky, folksy vibe.

Working from my studio near Lewes at the edge of the South Downs I work almost exclusively with original vintage fabrics and in particular cotton barkcloths from the 1930s- 1960s. Lampshades are a wonderful medium for bringing them back to their former glory and show off the artistry of the patterns.

These pre-loved fabrics have enjoyed a former life as curtains, bedspreads and tablecloths.I spend hours tracking them down from all over Europe and the US and now have a collection of over 200 prints.Barkcloth is a 4ply fabric distinguishable by its soft, nubby texture and open weave and beautiful intensity of colour on both sides of the fabric. It was a widely used upholstery fabric during the 1950s having been made popular by returning US sailors stationed in the Pacific Islands who had fallen for the famous brightly coloured barkcloth shirts. Sadly barkcloth is no longer produced by any major fabric company in the UK largely due to the cost and complexity of the dye process.

I am self taught working from the original DIY manuals and guides for the 1930’s-50s when every home had a homemade lampshade.

The soft sided traditional lampshades are all tailored by hand using a bound frame and lots of tiny stitches. They are trimmed top and bottom with a selection of 100% cotton trimmings and fringes all laboriously dyed by us to compliment the colours in the vintage barkcloth.

The wire frames are all made just down the road from 3.25 mm top quality heavy gauge wire which is Epoxy coated /painted white to prevent rusting. . Our wire technician has been making lampshade frames for over 40 years and shares our delight in re-discovering old form designs that had gone out of fashion long ago.

Our contemporary firm sided lampshades all have a beautifully hand rolled edge and are lined with the best quality fire retardant PVC . We are able to template a wide variety of shapes to compliment any lamp so there is no need to be stuck with boring drums.

The range of re-purposed lighting continues to grow rapidly. I come from a long line of shoemakers from Northamptonshire and I grew up surrounded by wooden shoe lasts. Alarmed to find my family using them as firewood I made my first shoe last lamp. Vintage aluminium jelly moulds followed and now we are continually on the hunt for items to light up. All lights are wired by a professional electrician and PAT tested and certificated.
