All in Pursuit of Stylish Organization
Journalist, language teacher, craftsmaniac and world traveler in search of fabric and a really good cup of coffee. A native of Colorado, I'm also a proud former resident of Pasadena, Ca. where in many ways my design mindset was honed - I lived minutes from The Gamble House, The Norton Simon Museum, Art Center, JPL and the Rose Bowl Swap Meet, mecca to vintage shoppers everywhere. One of my perennial newspaper job responsibilities included covering the renowned Pasadena Showcase House, interviewing some of the best interior and exterior designers in the country and still to this day, I go to SoCal to attend this annual event - it's my own little design pilgrimage.
Now, I spend time in the boroughs of Oakland and connecting with the design community of my own city, Napa, which treats food and wine as art. I love talking other artists and designers, enjoying the creativity of other disciplines. On that note, stay tuned for a new blog where I will be interviewing other craftspeople and artists from a plethora of fields on a regular basis. In truth, this isn't much of a departure for me, as I maintained a column in form or another about lifestyle, design and the arts during my entire career as a newspaper journalist, interviewing a host of notables as diverse as Pearl Jam's Jeff Ament and Thomas Keller to Kurt Vonnegut and, uh, Heidi Fleiss. (I've gotten some interesting comments out of this: FYI Heidi Fleiss grew up in Pasadena. And for a time, she had a popular undergarment store on a prominent corner in Old Town. She also published a book after her stint in prison. And for the record, she is wicked. smart.)

I really just fell head first into all of this...I feel like Alice chasing the rabbit most of the time.
First of all, I never thought fitting an apron to a person would be so detailed but just know I make all my own patterns and I have spent !COUNTLESS! hours on mock-ups and borrowed scores folks in all shapes and sizes to make sure my aprons fit well and are very flattering. In fact, original patterning has become something of an obsession and a minor profession.
Second, I've never been particularly impressed with the finish of any apron I've looked at in a store. There's possibly an element of cuteness or novelty about it but the fabric is usually second-rate, nothing is pressed and the back is unfinished and almost never lined with a backing material. It's like attaching a paper doll outfit to yourself! Yuk. So for example, my aprons with a single pocket aren't just two layers of fabric, they're FOUR. The pocket is lined with an all-cotton backing material and so is the back of the apron. So when you put it on there's something 'substantial' about it. This is a complete necessity for a utility-style apron which needs to carry things.
I only use high quality designer fabric. I feel I need to differentiate between fabric purchased at a local craft and fabric store because it's hard to realize the difference on an internet photo.
And finally, I think originality is the hallmark of a good and decent ETSY seller. I agree with others who note that you should be able to simply look at an item and know the maker/seller because it looks distinctively 'theirs,' and I think all ETSY sellers should strive for that kind of distinctiveness and originality. Low integrity people abound everywhere. ETSY is no exception and it fact, it appears to breed bad behavior, which is kind of sad if you ask me - so make sure you are choosing the ORIGINAL six and eight pocket Foodphyte apron when you make your purchase.
