About

Gramma Alice in the 1930s

**Please read the shop's story below, a note first.**

Sadly, Gramma Alice passed away on November 14, 2015. From now on, we will be donating 10% of all proceeds from this shop to Meals on Wheels - a wonderful organization that helped Gramma Alice stay in her home until she was 99. The other 90% will go to help close her estate. It has been and is a great honor to be doing something to help her - she was always there for me.

Among all the things I brought from Gramma's house in Massachusetts back to San Francisco to start this shop, my mom came across a huge pile of negatives dating from the 1930s through the 1970s. A lot of them had never been printed.

After a lot of trial and even more error, I finally figured out how to scan the 3/4 negatives and suddenly a new side of my grandmother started to emerge that I had only heard a few stories about. Those stories are now coming back to life through these photos 80 years later.

The pictures I posted here are from the late 1930s before my grandmother met my grandfather. It was the height of the depression but the prime of her life. She was in her 20s working 6 days a week at a factory in Springfield, MA and living at the local YWCA.

Every chance they got when the weather was nice, her friends and her would go to a lake, the ocean, a park and bring a picnic and hang out for the day. And whenever they could, they'd get all dolled up and go out dancing and drinking at underground bars and dance halls.

The more I photograph and research the items in her collection for this shop, the more I realize they represented those times for her. With every new piece, she was reminiscing and smiling.

She bought and sold her collection through the years to save up a little for her old age, but never thought she'd live to be 102. Her savings were depleted a few years ago and she spent her last two years in a wonderful nursing home near the house my grandfather built in 1941 on South Congamond Lake where she lived for 71 years.

I was carrying on her tradition of sharing her beautiful objects by selling them to support her care.

Gramma Alice was my maternal grandmother. She died on Nov. 14, 2015 at age 102. She would always let us choose one thing from her collection every birthday and Xmas. I am now selling the rest of her items on Etsy to help close her estate.

My Gramma Alice was born in Montreal, Canada in 1913 and passed away on November 14, 2015 at age 102. She collected all the items in this shop from the 1960s-1980s and sold them all over New England.

Thanks for checking out Gramma Alice's shop!

Everything for sale in this shop is from my grandmother's collection of vintage jewelry, linens, lace and clothing that she assembled from the early 1960s to the late 1990s. Most of the items were made in the early 20th century.

All proceeds go to her care (please click on my profile or the About page for more info on Gramma Alice). I do all the pictures, research, maintain the shop and pay for the listings, so don't hesitate to contact me with any questions. Both Gramma and I want you to be happy and I want to do my best to live up to her compassionate honest service!
