Treasures gracefully found
Lembro-me de encontrar o antigo baú do Exército do meu pai no armário de casacos. Era feito de metal e couro e cheirava a tempo. Aquele cheiro de mofo e desgastado encheu meu nariz e fiquei fisgado. Eu sabia que tinha encontrado um tesouro. Implorei ao meu pai que me contasse todos os detalhes sobre o conteúdo do baú. O boné militar que ele usava há muitos anos, o diário repleto de pensamentos de sua juventude e as fotografias em preto e branco de anos anteriores.
Esses eram verdadeiros tesouros! Mas o que foi melhor, realmente melhor, foi ouvir as histórias. As memórias de muito tempo atrás voltaram enquanto ele contava seu passado e eu dava uma olhada nos anos que fizeram de meu pai quem ele era.
Cada um de nós tem suas histórias. Às vezes, por acaso, encontramos algo que traz à tona uma memória antiga. E naquele instante estamos de volta àquele momento – brincando com um brinquedo favorito, visitando um lugar especial ou revivendo uma aventura com um antigo namorado. I remember finding my Dad's old Army footlocker in his coat closet. It was made of metal & leather and smelled of age. That musty, worn-in smell filled my nose and I was hooked. I knew I'd found treasure. I begged my Dad to tell me every last detail about the footlocker's contents. The military cap he had worn those many years ago, the journal filled with his youthful thoughts, and the black and white photographs of years past.
Those were real treasures! But what was best, truly best, was hearing the stories. The memories flooding back from long ago as he recounted his past and I got a peek into the years that made my Dad who he was.
We each have our stories. Sometimes, just by chance, we find something that draws out an old memory. And for that instant, we're back in that moment - playing with a favorite toy, visiting a special place, or re-living an adventure with an old sweetheart.
