Announcement   Buy beautiful works of unique Tangle Art. Art for your family, your friends, your home, your colleagues, the office or just for you!

Way back in 1993 I was studying my Art GCSE. I saw one of my friends doodling and liked what I saw.

18 years later, I stumbled upon the art of Zentangle and realised that I had been doing something similar many years before. I picked up a pen and a piece of paper and started to doodle some tangles. I thought about what I would do with my rediscovered art and one thing that I could not seem to find online was anyone doing tangles in the shape of letters, words or names.

What are Tangles? Essentially 'tangles' are the unique patterns that you can see within my images. They often begin with a line or a shape and develop as the pen moves. When I 'tangle' I usually don't know what the finished piece will look like, so I'm constantly surprised when I step back and look at the final image. I hope you will be impressed by the elegance, movement, flow and stark contrast within my Tangles.

Time to Tangle: I am often asked how do I go about creating my tangle pieces. I usually start with an outline sometimes in pencil and sometimes directly in ink. Depending on the image I am working on, I will then divide the image into sections and begin drawing the repeate tangle patterns. If the image is small it is less effective to divide it into even smaller sections, so smaller images have less sections of different patterns. I usually ink in the images as I go. I tend to work from left to right to avoid smudging!

About

FT FAQs!

People ask me these questions all the time......

How long do they take?
Lots of people ask me this question and it's quite difficult to answer, because some take a bit longer than others and some take a lot longer! I did a simple exercise and timed myself tangling an A4 Tangle word made up of 5 letters and it took me an hour a letter. So an A4 Tangle word with more or less letters would take a little less than or more than 5 hours. To tangle an A3 or A5 word would be relative to the five hours. Length of time can also depend on lighting - if I am working in a brightly 'day lit' room, it is better than in a dark room with artificial lighting. Also, the complexity of an image impacts on time taken too - an S will take more time to tangle than an L! All of these factors impact on tangling time.

Are they prints?
All tangles are done by hand, by me, and some are then reproduced. The majority of my work are special, one off commissions. What you see in my Etsy shop are mainly reprints (greetings cards and ZebrA Alphabet).

What pen do you use?
It depends on what paper I'm using. I usually use a simple black gel pen but I also have a set of permanent pigment ink pens that have nibs of different sizes. These help me create movement and depth in my tangles. Pen choice is very much dependent on the texture of the surface of the paper I'm using.

Are all Tangles black and white?
Yes. I've thought about doing tangles in different colours, but I like the stark contract between the black and white. If I did them in colour, I think they'd loose something. However, you can frame your tangle in any colour and size of frame that you want. I usually have some standard lower cost frames available but I can order made to measure frames for you to meet your budget.

Can you tangle cards?
Yes. I can tangle anything you like, from wedding invitations, greetings cards, invitations, christmas cards etc. Greetings cards are usually a standard price and are copied. However, if you would like a set of cards tangled to your own unique design, not to be copied, this will cost you a little more.

Can you tangle on other things?
Yes. I can reproduce your tangle onto mugs, bags, t-shirts, hoodies, baseball caps and all sorts of things for you. I can also tangle directly onto glass and porcelain. So, if you would like a plate, flower pot, glass or mug hand tangled, I can do that for you too.

Can I collect my tangle?
Yes. Some people prefer to have them posted and some people like to collect them from me at craft fayres. Keep your eyes on the 'Find FT' events list at the top left of the page to find out where I will be in the next few weeks.

Do I need to pay for my commission now?
It depends on the price of the tangle. For lower cost tangles, payment will be required with the commission. For more expensive tangles, a deposit will be accepted to proceed with the commission. However, for unique tangles (e.g. Steve & Ffion, 24.3.11) that cannot be sold to anyone else, the full cost will be sought. For tangles that could be sold to others (e.g. Richard) a deposit will be considered. So, in answer to the question, yes and no - immediacy of payment is relative to size and uniqueness!
