About FormerFibres

Sales 431
On Etsy since 2019

Just one boss lady, trying to do her little bit for the environment.

Former Fibres started as a Christmas gift for my father, who dislikes the commercialized season that Christmas has become. Instead of gifting him something bought, my family does acts of kindness in his name and surprise him with our contributions. I knew that I wanted to use my creativity and make something, but what could it be? I had been very aware of all the environmental impacts that plastic has on our planet, and stopped using single-use plastics in our home. Every time that I needed to get rid of something I would think of where it goes and how it can be used. So then one day it came to me, I was going through all of my sheets, matching up odds and ends finding a few complete sets that I wanted, but a whole lot of extras we didn’t need in our little home. A light bulb went off in my head, what if I used upcycled fabric to make pet beds! I went straight out and found myself a sewing machine and remembered those sewing skills that I learnt in Girl Guides many years ago.

When it came to the part to stuff my beds with filling, I was hit with a surprise, unknown to me at the time polyfill is of course PLASTIC! After doing some research I discovered how polyfill is made, the harmful chemicals used and how it is horrible for our pets, yet every bed you find is filled with it. I had to find a better alternative, I went searching high and low and even after calling almost every fabric supply store in the greater Toronto area, I was at a loss, no one carried an environmental alternative. To the internet, I went and ended up stumbling across Kapok. So there I had it, a lovely environmental pet bed that was lovingly handmade by myself and stuffed with all natural fibre harvested from the seedpod of the Kapok tree!

I made a few extra so that for every bed that I gifted that Christmas to my family and friends, I was also able to donate one to a pet in need in my dad’s name. Nine kitty’s/small dogs, and one large dog got a new comfortable bed to sleep on that holiday. Best of all was the look on my Dad's face when he saw what I had created. In the same spirit, I continue to donate beds to shelters using up odds and ends of my fabric, ensuring that nothing goes to waste.

Everything from the products I create to the packaging that they're shipped in is made with the environment in mind.

Large - suitable for dogs up to 90 lbs

Gift wrapping and packaging

My products are packaged just for you, with the environment in mind. You'll be happy to know that our packaging is 100% recyclable and/or biodegradable and will contain zero plastic. Even our paper packaging tape is made from 95% post-consumer recycled content.

Custom and personalised orders

I love creating custom orders! My pattern is easily scalable so If your pet is in need of a custom size bed either larger or smaller than our traditional sizes just reach out.

Custom patterns/colours can also be requested, keeping in mind that due to my fabric being all upcycled I actually have to hunt for your ideal pattern combination. It’s easy for your pets bed to match the decor of your home - just send me some images of your aesthetic, and I’ll take it from there!

All custom orders are paid in advance and start at 4 week production time.

Wholesale availability

Small independent wholesale opportunities are available. Connect with me to discuss terms.

Is the shipping really that high on my order with multiple products?

Etsy is not ideal for calculating shipping on purchases with multiple items. If you are purchasing multiple products from my shop at the same time, then in most cases only the item with the highest shipping rate will apply. The only case where this does not apply is when you are purchasing multiples of Kapok. Refunds for any shipping overages from your order will be returned when I create your shipping label. If you have questions about shipping, feel free to message me for a shipping estimate.

If you have a Bed Shell, and an order of Kapok in your cart, then the Bed Shell Ships FREE.

If you have 2 orders of Kapok, and a bed shell in your cart, then both Kapok shipping charges apply but the bed shell ships FREE.

Are your products vegan? Do they use/contain any animal materials?

Not only are my products eco-friendly they are also vegan-friendly! Using 100% synthetic (polyester, nylon, etc.), and 100% plant-based (Kapok, cotton, hemp, etc.) materials. Even my label is now made from unbleached organic cotton. Feel free to message me for a detailed breakdown.

Washing your self-stuffed bed

If you purchased one of my bed shells and stuffed it yourself using your own blankets or sheets, then you can place your bed in the wash like normal. I still recommend removing your filling for a better clean and a faster dry cycle. Also, if you have a large bed and your washer is not large enough to handle the full load, you can wash the filling in a separate load. I recommend using an all-natural or unscented detergent. You will need a higher, energy efficient setting on your dryer to dry both the shell and stuffing thoroughly.

Fluffing your Kapok filled bed

Kapok fibre compresses when slept on, but fluffs back to shape easily! To keep your pet most comfortable, fluff the bed periodically to break up the Kapok fibres. After prolonged use, take your bed outside for a few hours and place it in direct sunlight. The UV rays from the sun naturally disinfect the cover and the Kapok fibres will fluff right back up to shape. During the winter months, a great alternative is to fluff your bed using the dryer! Use a low temperature setting for 30 mins, and add in some laundry balls with some pet safe essential oils, or tennis balls work great too!

Weekly spot cleaning

As Kapok is naturally anti-bacterial and resistant to rot, only the cover will need cleaning. I recommend vacuuming your bed weekly and spot cleaning any light dirt with warm water as needed; you can even use your favourite natural pet spray cleaner, or you can find our DIY recipe on our Instagram stories. Pat the bed to dry and then stick it out in the sun - the UV rays will expand the Kapok fibres, disinfect naturally and dry the fabric shell nicely (see fluffing your bed above.)

Monthly Washing Or accident cleaning your Kapok filled bed

Remove the Kapok from your bed shell by accessing the zipper compartment on the bottom of your bed. If you purchased a Kapok filled bed, your order came with a handy Kapok sac to place your fibres into while your bed shell is being washed. We recommend un-stuffing and stuffing your bed outside, as Kapok fibres are very light and will travel, so they tend to make a mess. Not to worry though! Because Kapok is natural, it will compost and become part of the earth again. Kapok is waterproof and it should never be placed in the wash. It will clump and can be difficult to re-fluff, which is why we recommend removing it from your bed prior to washing. Read my full and detailed care instruction sheet here:
