Welcome to Foundry Design. From my workshop in Evanston, Illinois, I produce clothing from original designs. I make them from recycled sweaters, fabrics and leathers/suedes I find in local thrift stores that support charitable causes, as well as found fabrics I collect from other sources. I only use the best wools, cashmere, silks, mohair, alpaca, angora and some blends in my designs, which hint at my interests in other cultures, travel and literature.

By day, I am a freelance writer who covers business, the arts and culture. Also by day now (and some nights) I am turning 38 years of designing and sewing clothing into a second vocation. Like a foundry casting new objects from mixed metals, my aim is to produce beautiful things for you to wear from found materials. . .well-made, with distinctive detailing you won’t find in mass-produced clothing, while we take better care of our world in the process.

I want you to be pleased with your Foundry purchase, so please read my shop policies before buying for size, payment and shipping info. And convo me with any questions.

Please “favorite” my shop to find me again in the inspiring maze that is Etsy.

I am not accepting custom orders at this time.

Accepted payment methods

  • Accepts Etsy gift cards
Payment
Payment is required when you place your order. I accept Paypal (you do not need to have a Paypal account to use this payment method), Etsy gift cards and Etsy direct check-out. If I do not receive payment within three days of your initiating a transaction, I will cancel the sale and return the item to the shop floor.

If you use Etsy direct check-out, I will ship your order after receiving payment, which goes through bank clearance in about one week.

I am required by law to charge sales tax for orders shipped to Illinois addresses.
Shipping
I ship once a week, usually Tuesdays, unless your order is urgent. For items going to U.S. destinations, I use Priority Mail (which usually takes 3-4 days) with delivery confirmation. Additional insurance (greater than $50) or express delivery are available upon request.

Shipping charges are researched estimates. If actual charges are less and the difference is $2 or more, I'll refund it to you.

For items going to international destinations, I use Priority International. Please contact me for shipping costs to your country.

I do not work with shippers sent by outside parties.
Refunds and Exchanges
As I am closing my shop, all sales are final, so please note sizes and measurements closely before you order. I want you to be happy with your purchase, so if you have any questions, contact me before ordering.
Additional policies and FAQs
I am not accepting custom orders at this time.

Sizing -- The sizes I design and cut Foundry garments to are U.S. sizes:

XS = dress size 2-4
S = dress size 6-8
M= dress size 10-12
L= dress size 14-16
XL=dress size 18-20

You know the old saying – measure twice and cut once. I try extra hard to size Foundry items consistently with store-bought clothing, but the wide variety of knits and other materials I use makes each garment unique. So, please compare the measurements I provide for each item to a similar garment you already own. Shoulder measurements go shoulder seam-to-seam across the front. chest measurements go across the front, one underarm seam to the other. Waist means across the front at the waistline. Length runs from the shoulder seam at the base of the neck down the front to the hem. And sleeve measurement runs from the shoulder seam down to the sleeve hem.

Bust: fullest circumference of your chest (not bra size)
Waist: the narrowest circumference of your waist
Hips: the fullest circumference of your hips, usually 3 inches below your hipbones

Care instructions -- Foundry Design garments are painstakingly made and finished. I pre-wash most fabrics before making each piece. To ensure that knits' good looks last, please hand wash them in cold water using a gentle detergent such as Woolite, Ivory Snow or organic soap. Lay flat to dry. Lightly iron on wool setting. For wovens, please follow the instructions that I include with each garment or convo me.
