Soy un fabricante de muñecas y creador de criaturas. Nunca entendí por qué crecer debería significar dejar atrás las cosas de belleza y capricho que amaba cuando era niña. Así que no lo hice. Mi amor permanente por la naturaleza y un sentido infantil de asombro impulsan mi trabajo. A través de cada criatura que hago, invito a aquellos que la ven a participar en contar una historia, una historia sobre cómo encontrar el camino hacia las hadas, un camino desde la vida ordinaria hacia los mundos de magia que sustentan nuestra conciencia diaria y persiguen nuestros sueños.
Trabajo principalmente con una técnica llamada fieltro de agujas. Es un recién llegado al mundo de la artesanía, lo que permite que los materiales antiguos de lana y fibra se utilicen de manera revolucionaria. Con las agujas afiladas y de púas, esculpo la lana en muchas formas como si fuera arcilla. El viaje desde el vellón hasta las figuras de fieltro sólido es infinitamente fascinante para mí, y empiezo con la fibra en diferentes etapas de ese viaje dependiendo del trabajo en cuestión, a veces usando una paleta de lana pre-teñida, y otras veces eligiendo un vellón de la oveja correcta y recolectando hojas y flores para imbuirlo de colores que reflejen el paisaje del que provienen.
El fieltro tiene una calidez y suavidad casi vivas que es perfecta para transmitir la sensación de bienvenida que deseo que todas mis criaturas soporten. Mi espíritu como artista es que el arte es para todos, y soy más feliz cuando mi sentimiento inspira a alguien a acercarse y maravillarse con un detalle inesperado que llamó su atención.
I am a dollmaker and creature creator. I never understood why growing up should mean leaving behind the things of beauty and whimsy I loved as a child. So I didn’t. My abiding love of nature and a childlike sense of wonder drive my work. Through each creature I make, I invite those who see it to participate in telling a story, a tale about finding one’s way into Faerie -- a path from ordinary life into the worlds of magic that underpin our daily consciousness and haunt our dreams.
I work primarily with a technique called needle felting. It is a newcomer to the world of craft, allowing age-old materials of wool and fiber to be used in revolutionary ways. With the sharp, barbed needles, I sculpt wool into many forms as if it were clay. The journey from fleece to figures of solid felt is endlessly fascinating to me, and I start with fiber in different stages of that journey depending on the work at hand, sometimes using a palette of pre-dyed wool, and other times choosing a fleece from just the right sheep and gathering leaves and flowers to imbue it with colors that reflect the landscape from which they come.
Felt has an almost living warmth and softness that is perfect for conveying the feeling of welcome I wish all my creatures to bear. My ethos as an artist is that art is for everyone, and I am happiest when my felt inspires someone to step closer and marvel at an unexpected detail that caught their eye.
