About Indigo Hill Dye Studio

From our front porch, looking across farm fields over which barn swallows swoop in the Summer and the winds blow fiercely in the Winter, I can see the blue hills of the Laurentians. Indeed, from many points in the town of Vankleek Hill these highlands are visible in the distance – indigo tinged with green in warm times, purple-blue and streaked with snow in the cold. When searching for a name for my home-based natural dyeing business, I looked to the landscape that provides so much inspiration and raw materials for what I do year-round. The garden provides many plants for my dyeing projects, including hollyhocks, coreopsis, chamomile, and tansy; the wild spaces of this corner of Ontario hold further treasures for this natural dyer, like black walnut, goldenrod, Labrador tea and Queen Anne’s lace. These plants and many others I use fresh in season, filling pots with flowers, roots, leaves, nuts to coax out their colour with the help of water and heat. When all is at rest outside, in the dead of Winter, I pull out the plants that I dried and reawaken their colours and scents. Like the days that pass as the seasons turn, regular and yet each unique, every dye bath and every fibre dyed are part of an ongoing ritual but also crystalized moments captured on cloth or yarn.

Because I like to play, in this shop you’ll find a variety of products that incorporate natural dyeing practices: eco-printed silk scarves, plant-dyed local farm yarns, a rainbow of cotton sashiko threads, bandanas resist-dyed with indigo, dyed fabric scraps for quilting or patching… The list is ever-evolving as I find new ways to project my landscape onto material culture. I value Slow Colour and I value ways of preserving the textiles that are a part of our daily lives – which is why I also carry products to help you mend your garments and extend their lifespans. Here you may find a carefully made gift for yourself or a loved one, or you may find the supplies you’re looking for to pursue your own crafting adventures. Whichever the case, I’m happy to know that I can share some of the colours of my world with you.
