About

About Renard et Fleur

Our family lives an hour west of Montreal, in a town of towering pine trees and ever-present birdsong. Our yard is small, yet hums with year-round activity: gardens that each year claim a little more lawn space, a busy chicken coop, paths in the earth and snow that meander between deck, shed, playhouse and sandbox, beaten down by big feet, little feet, cat feet, rabbit feet... and, as it turns out, fox feet.

In the first summer of the fox, a mother and her lanky kit visited daily. Their paths were always the same, swiftly and silently passing alongside the cedar, checking the coop for a door left open, lingering in the shadows under the boughs of the spruce to watch the hens, then slipping into the border of sunchokes, in search of easier prey. They were very bold, coming in full daylight even if we were in the backyard at quiet work or play. Sometimes a hen alarm told us of their presence; sometimes all we saw was a blur of orange and white caught out of the corner of the eye. We felt both honoured and on edge to have these creatures of wildness so close to our home.

As I got more steeped in my natural dyeing projects, I tried to think of a name that would reflect the process of capturing the colours of my landscape. I thought of the red fox, a creature that can traverse suburban and rural spaces, backyards and fields, in its hunt for food. Many of the plants it passes by in its day are ones that I can harvest for colour: spruce, blackberry, mullein, marigold, brown-eyed Susan, sumach, goldenrod... its face and tail just visible in a flash of contrasting colour, then hidden again by the greens, browns, and myriad blossom hues.

I like to think of myself as traversing these spaces, as well, hunting for dye plants with which to feed my dye pot and imprint upon the fibres with which I spin and knit. Renard et Fleur is a window into my landscape.

Here you will find natural fibres (untreated wool, silk, organic cotton, linen) matched with these natural colours. As much as possible, I try to source local fibres for my products. My Farm Yarns line of dyed yarns celebrates the farmers, animals and fibres of my region. Many of my colours are derived from plants I have mindfully harvested from the wild or that grow in my own dye garden. I also use some imported natural dyes that speak of the long dye traditions of other cultures.

Thank you for visiting my space!
