It gave me two of the books missing in my 1909 set. Very pleased with the whole transaction. I've since ordered more to get the other missing book. Thank you.

Additional policies and FAQs

Individual listings will be in EXCELLENT or VERY GOOD condition.

Very few books that have been around for more than 20 years can be described as “AS NEW”. We use this description almost never.

Very close to AS NEW. Book has been read, but has no defects.
We use this term as it is more familiar to our customers than the standard bookseller term “FINE”.

Book may be worn and show minor defects which will be described in the listing.
Free Parking does not generally list individually any book that is not in VERY GOOD or better condition.

The condition of the books we list in our vintage book bundles varies. Books that do not meet the condition requirements of our individual listings may be gathered into bundles or lots. Bundles may also contain books that DO meet our condition requirements for individual listings, but for one reason or another, we decide to sell in a group.

These may be books used for interior decoration, photography props, real estate staging, retail décor, home or office library, institutional ambience, or the like. Artists sometimes purchase them for repurposed or altered art

Book bundles may be sorted by color, by genre or subject (poetry, biography, etc.), by binding (ornate, pictorial, etc.),

Books in a bundle may show any of the following:
Fading of original color on cover or spine
Age tanning: pages yellowing or browning around the edges or throughout.
Foxing, fingerprints,
Marks: pen or pencil marks, notes
Ex-library: former library book with possible library markings, book pocket
Pages missing: free endpaper or half-title page removed by previous owner
Taped pages
Hinges may be cracked or taped, but cover will not be loose
War years poor quality paper
Pages may be uncut

We have a supply of MAPS, MUSIC and BOOKS that do not meet our condition requirements for listing. Perfect for art projects! If repurposing is your game - collage, decoupage, altered art, cards, magnets, pinback buttons, hang tags, books, and you like to use original materials, - please contact us with your needs. If we have what you want, we will create a listing for you!

A search will show that there are many interpretations of these two terms as they relate to vintage books. We are not experts, but we do have a policy on mildew and foxing in our collection of books, music and paper ephemera.

FREE PARKING DOES NOT CARRY OR SELL ANY MILDEWED OR MOLDY ITEMS, OR ANY ITEMS WITH A MOLDY OR MUSTY ODOR. Our books and music are carefully inspected, including a sniff test, prior to being added to our collection. Any suspicious items are wrapped and discarded. Here is why:

Mildew or mold can be a damp or dry, grey, white, blue or green powdery material on the pages or covers of a book. There is often a musty odor to the item. Sometimes the mildew is not obvious, but the book still smells.

There are many processes recommended for removing mold or mildew from books: washing, drying, brushing, bleaching, freezing, fungicides, charcoal or cat litter, etc. There are problems with all of these methods. A book that has been “cleaned” of mold can still carry spores and the problem can return. The smell is persistent and very unpleasant. Mold can spread from one book to another. Some people have severe allergies to mold.

Foxing is the appearance on old paper of brownish-red spots caused by an interaction between chemicals, including iron, and acids in the paper. It may have been precipitated by humidity. Foxing does not damage the paper itself, and it cannot spread to other books. There is no odor. There are treatments to reduce foxing, but unless the book is extremely valuable, it is considered proof of age, and just left as is.

We will always note foxing in an item listing, often including a photo.
