4 out of 5 stars

These soaps seem to be of very good quality. The bundle, however, did not work so well for me; I would rather have three larger pieces than the four smaller ones I received (one soap broke immediately) to give it a fair try. This seems to qualify my remark about the soap quality, but one shower is usually enough to tell a good product from a bad one. I'll just order a whole soap next time.

About

My American Story

Freedom Soap Company was created in my kitchen here in Birmingham, AL while working as an inner-city elementary school teacher in 2012. When I wasn’t teaching and nurturing the needs of at-risk children, I spent my summers cooking and creating goods from scratch..partly out of necessity, but mostly out of my desire to keep things as healthy, natural, and sustainable as possible.

My experimentation with soapmaking soon turned into a part-time business, of which I conducted mostly in the teacher’s lounge and through word of mouth. I eventually started selling online, at the local farmer’s market, and through a few small retailers. From there, I was faced with the difficult decision to leave my career and follow this new path...wherever that may lead.

Now, Freedom Soap Company is a full-time operation. I make each batch of soap by hand, with the help of my husband, local working farmers, and other collaborators. I follow the traditional cold-process method, and use only natural plant material, various clays, and essential oils to color and scent my soaps. I source as many ingredients locally as I can...whether it’s craft beer from a local brewery, honey from a neighboring beekeeper, or herbs from our home garden. Once a batch has been poured and saponified, each bar is hand-cut and then cured for at least 30 days before it’s ready to be used.

All of my soaps are free of chemicals, synthetic fragrance, and palm oil. I do not want or need to use ingredients that are chemically derived in any of my products. The harvesting of palm oil...a common ingredient found in most soaps (including natural and handmade) is the leading cause for the deforestation of the rainforest. I do not support the destruction of fragile habitats and ecosystems, and never use this oil in my soaps.

I draw inspiration from the seasons, my community, and the simplicity of nature. Composing interesting combinations of scent, texture, and therapeutic properties is what keeps me motivated. I truly believe that the quality that results from creating goods by hand will never be matched by commercial manufacturing.

Like me, Freedom Soap Co. continues to evolve and grow each year. Recently, my husband and I welcomed the birth of our daughter Nora--our coolest creation yet! I feel so very blessed to be able to live and work harmoniously while keeping my passion for good health and family at the center of everything I do.

I’d love to hear from you! Feel free to share your ideas and thoughts with me at chasity [!at] freedomsoaps.com. Also, you can follow some of my process, life, and other musings at www.facebook.com/freedomsoapcompany
