Hi-Tech & Handmade: Embracing the moment with respect for the old & new

As soon as I saw how metal can be melted, annealed and reformed I was fascinated and I haven’t been able to stop. I started drawing out ideas for simple jewelry that I wanted to make; it was a freeing experience to be able to design, make something, and wear it.

I joined the makerspace, TechShop, in Pittsburgh to help find new ways to create my designs. I embraced the laser cutter, water jets and 3d printers to help me better prototype, precision cut and take my designs to new places. These tools are helpful, but they only get me halfway. There's lots of soldering, sanding, forming, stone-setting, polishing, assembling, packaging and shipping that occurs as well. I'm proud of my hybrid process that mixes traditional and modern methods that continues to help me make gifts and daily-wear jewelry.

Making gifts for close family and friends that they’d want to wear daily is how Frost Finery was born. That really shaped my mission of creating staple pieces that can be worn every day. Staple pieces for me include, simple shapes and designs that look great whether they’re worn solo or layered with other pieces. I really strive for them to feel timeless, so you’ll still love wearing them in two years, or 10 years or 40 years out. And when you wear it, hopefully it reminds you of a time or a place or an event you're thankful for.

Frost Finery is grateful for the opportunity to bring these hand-crafted items to you and in order to keep them accessible we've partnered with a local metals company here in Pittsburgh, E.H. Schwab, a family owned and operated company for more than 50 years! It can be a challenge to do every single job as a one-woman show, so my friend Randy, who operates the fiber optic metal laser cutter sometimes helps me get my cuts done. In addition, our new assistant Archer joined the team and is helping to keep us on track by taking on lots of different tasks, including social media, laser cutting and shipping.

We are grateful to be part of the Etsy community, the made in USA community and our local Pittsburgh community. It is our hope that you love our items as much as we loved making them. I hope it sparks joy in your life and your home as it does mine.
