We've been in business since Jan 2009 initially working directly with interior designers. Since Dec 2010 we've expanded our clientele to include the general public. We create fine textile goods and custom furniture pieces. When possible, we enjoy repurposing vintage items including fabric, paper and steel.
Have a great day!

This bag was lovingly made by Nancy of FunctionalArt, Yakima, WA. I bought a partially finished hooked piece on eBay, then completed it. I then explored etsy for wool tote, finding Nancy. We corresponded many times via email and Nancy would listen then put my ideas into reality. In Rughooking we love recycled wool. So does Nancy. Sending me several options we decided on a Pendleton "find". Requesting the hooked piece on a pocket, she did that and more. We use "bit-bags" for our snippets and those bags also hold our hook & scissors. Measuring mine & sending that info to Nancy, she customized a pocket for that. There are many interior & exterior pockets- just what's needed! Icing on the cake? She takes a photo of original jacket & piece sent, laminates it, and will keep attached to the strap inside. Best find!

Combines some of my favorites-Native American history and culture with Pendleton inspired embroidery. Working with Nancy was easy. She was very quick to send out communication and kept me updated in the process. She has high standards and her work shows! Can't tell you how much I love and cherish these pieces! Thanks so much! Might be back for more in the future!!!

About

Today I will choose Joy

"Today I will choose Joy" is a quote I have in my sewing room that reminds me that every day is a choice for me and that I can make what I want of each day.
My husband and I grew up in a sparsely populated southeastern corner of Montana. We built our home and lived on 20 acres there with a huge garden and every animal we could raise, including a milk cow and chickens, to provide milk and eggs. My grandparents told me we were born in the wrong era as we loved doing everything from growing and canning our own food, making cheese and yogurt, grinding wheat for flour to make bread, melting tallow to make candles and soap and building our own house. I am really thankful for that time we had, raising our two daughters to think and play and create without a TV - we just learned to make our own fun! We were 20 miles from the nearest town of 500 people and thus learned quickly to fix our own problems and do things on our own. Because of this, we learned a lot of skills that have helped us to not only be more self-reliant but resourceful and progressive with our business. We work independently and also with and for our daughter Janine in Vancouver, BC who is an interior designer and shop owner. Between her and our other daughter Heather who lives in Seattle, there are always new ideas and goals being shared, fashioned and executed.

Functional Art began in Jan 09 and joined Etsy Dec 10. By May 12, we had read enough "Quit Your Day Job" articles that I took the plunge and did just that. I'm happy & contented at home and inspired every day by people & environment around me!
