Announcement   FUNKTIONHOUSE Urban Lumber & Furnishings supplies unique and rare slabs, turning stock and lumber, and builds one of a kind, quality furnishings using urban trees cut down in our own neighborhood. Owners Robert & Zoë Bocik salvage these beautiful trees by working with local arborists, home-owners, and municipalities—having trees that otherwise would have been firewood or landfill delivered to their on-site milling yard. Together, they mill and then render this gorgeous wood for use after drying it in their on-site dehumidifying kiln. Because Rob & Zoë are involved ‘hands-on’ with every step of the process from tree selection and milling to completed object, their love for wood and passion for the environment is translated into their beautiful and elegant furnishing designs; showcasing the incredible figure and colors of urban lumber, utilizing simple builds and completing each project with natural finishes; letting the wood “speak for itself”.

I love unique and interesting wood types, so I was excited to find something I hadn't worked with before. The material arrived safely and in great condition. And the seller kept me updated during the whole process!

About

Responsibly harvested, urban lumber made into fresh, modern furnishings, lighting, home accents and more!

In 2010, Rob and Zoe had a dream...to design and build a coffee table for their own livingroom from the most eco-friendly, renewable resourced, responsible wood they could find. They studied pallet furniture, bamboo furniture, reclaimed barn wood, etc., but none had the uniqueness and beauty they hoped for. Then they stumbled upon the term 'Urban Lumber'. A whole world of possibilities opened up for them! They began collecting books about local trees, learned the science behind milling and drying wood, and started small--right in their back yard with a few local logs provided by an arborist friend...They looked for advice from other woodworkers all over the country, and began sharing pictures and sending small stock to various woodworkers and artists. Word got around, Rob & Zoe's wood pile grew, and by late 2010, a full-time business supplying lumber and turning stock from trees that were otherwise going to be destroyed was born.

Living in Florida's tropical climate, and in an urban environment where there is wonderful diversity in culture and landscaping provides a never-ending selection of exotic hardwoods, fruit & nut woods, standard building woods along with new and rare species we love exploring.

Rob and Zoe collect the trees, mill the lumber, dry slabs in their recycled box kiln, and design and build one-of-a-kind furnishings from start to finish, ensuring quality and craftsmanship in every piece.

4 years later, FUNKTIONHOUSE has finally moved into a full-time workshop with a lumber yard and showroom. We love sharing what we do, and are passionate about the environment, so please don't hesitate to ask questions or if you are in our area, give us a call and drop by for a visit!
