Announcement   Two announcements! Firstly, I must reluctantly admit that the custom crochet cases I have been providing free with every item are taking up far too much of my time and have contributed greatly to the backlog of orders that has caused my slow shipping time over the past couple of months. I understand that not all customers require these, so they are now available as an optional extra under the ‘Gift wrap’ option at checkout for a price of £4.00. I’m sorry to disappoint, but I really have little choice in this. 😔
As the gift wrap option only allows one case purchase per order, for multiple orders requiring multiple cases please specify by adding a note with your order, and I will send a PayPal invoice for the additional sum.

Secondly, better news- the backlog of orders is finally cleared amd shipping times are back down to the usual 1 - 3 days 😊

About

Sustainable crafts made from salvaged and recycled materials

I've always made things, ever since I was little. The first thing I made out of wood was a tiny boat- I hollowed out a small banana-shaped piece of wood with a sharp stone, over successive break times in the first year in primary school. It floated upright in the sink and gave me a real sense of accomplishment. I'm lucky to have an incredibly talented mother who taught me to knit and sew and crochet as a kid and showed me that it's possible to make all manner of beautiful things if you apply time and patience and determination.

My workshop is a converted washroom in my boat, about four feet by five feet. It's absolutely crammed with tools, antlers, branches and sawn-up chunks of wood and although working in there can sometimes be a lesson in contortion, it has everything I need.

I don't use patterns or templates for my work and I rarely design the shape of a piece before I start working on it; the design is determined by the shape and character of the materials I find. I love sitting with a piece of wood and turning it over and trying to see what is waiting inside it to be made.
Because I do not use uniform pieces of kiln-dried wood, the materials I use are often small, strangely shaped and feature flaws and cracks that must be worked around, resulting in every piece being completely individual and giving rise to many weird and wonderful shapes. This method of working organically and intuitively with the wood makes it harder for me when I have to impose a set design on a piece, such as a custom order, and these pieces always seem to involve considerably more time and effort than my usual pieces, a fact which is reflected in the price.

I keep a blog (furnivalsworkshop.blogspot.co.uk) about the trees whose wood I use for my crafts. For me, part of the magic of wood is knowing intimately the character of the species of tree it came from, its habits and history, the legends and superstitions associated with it and its relationship with wildlife and mankind. I've always been fascinated by and deeply involved with trees and I hope it shows in my work.

Additional policies and FAQs
I guarantee all my pieces for life, which means if anything ever happens to them I will advise, repair, replace or refund depending on the circumstance. Wood in particular often mends beautifully and can be reinforced with metal rods if necessary, leaving the piece stronger than before and often with a barely discernible mend. I like a challenge, and I haven't met the broken hair fork that I haven't been able to mend yet ;)
