Un nuevo amor
En la escuela hubo cuatro años de clases de arte donde siempre me sentí inadecuada. Sí, aprendí a pintar y hacer todo tipo de manualidades, incluyendo caligrafía, fotografía y trabajé con yeso, arcilla y otros medios. Había aprendido a coser, hacer ganchillo, tejer e hice bordados, punto de cruz y todas esas formas de costura, también. Si bien todo eso fue y sigue siendo agradable, el medio que realmente me ha llamado la atención llegó más tarde en la vida y es el hermoso mundo de las cuentas de vidrio que permiten presentar una imagen en casi un estilo de mosaico. Comencé con el tipo de cuentas semipreciosas en todo tipo de proyectos de encordado, pero un día descubrí las fabulosas cuentas de vidrio diminutas llamadas Delica. Las vidrieras siempre fueron algo que me encantó, pero la idea de cortar el vidrio no me atrajo en absoluto. Así que poder diseñar y hacer imágenes sin el peligro de cortarme me pareció realmente maravilloso. Alimentamos a las aves en nuestro patio trasero y al estar en una ruta migratoria vemos todo tipo de aves migratorias y por lo tanto parecían sujetos "naturales". Comencé con lápiz y papel cuadriculado, pero eso fue muy lento. Mi esposo toma fotos maravillosas y con los avances del software de computadora la posibilidad de diseño ha avanzado enormemente y realmente ha ayudado a mi patronaje. Me gusta hacer patrones abstractos, geométricos, de mi imaginación y escenas de fotografías. Recientemente he hecho algunos trabajos de retrato y ese es otro desafío. También hay muchos patrones religiosos en mi folio de diseños. No puedo explicar por qué una idea o imagen se aferra a mi mente, pero a menudo solo un vistazo de algo me atrapa y exige quedar atrapado para siempre en una forma de tapiz de cuentas.
Llevo casado 58 años, tengo 5 hijos, 16 nietos y pronto serán 12 bisnietos. La vida ha sido buena y sólo el buen Señor sabe lo que sigue.

A New Love
In school there were four years of art classes where I always felt inadequate. Yes, I learned to paint and do all sorts of crafts including calligraphy, photography and worked with plaster, clay and other media. I had learned to sew, crochet, knit and did embroidery, cross stitch and all those forms of needlework, too. While all of that was and is still enjoyable the medium that has really caught my interest came later in life and is the beautiful world of glass beads which allow one to present an image in almost a mosaic style. I started with the semi-precious kind of beads in all sorts of stringing projects but then one day discovered the fabulous tiny glass beads called Delica. Stained glass was always something I loved but the idea of cutting the glass did not appeal to me at all. So to be able to design and make images without the danger of cutting myself seemed wonderful indeed. We feed the birds in our back yard and being on a flyway see all sorts of migrating birds and so they seemed like "natural" subjects. I began with pencil and graph paper but that was oh, so very slow. My husband takes wonderful pictures and with the advances of computer software the possibility for design has advanced tremendously and has really helped my pattern making. I like to do abstract, geometric, patterns from my imagination and scenes from photographs. Recently I have done some portrait work and that is another challenge. There are also many religious patterns in my folio of designs. I can't explain why an idea or image latches on in my mind but often just a glimpse of something catches my fancy and demands to be caught forever in a beaded tapestry like form.
I have been married now for 58 years, have 5 children, 16 grandchildren and soon it will be 12 great grandchildren. Life has been good and only the good Lord knows what is next.
