About

Once Upon A Time

I was instilled with a love for art and craft at an early age. Is it any wonder with a grandmother who was a trained art teacher, a grandfather and father who were jewelers and a mother who was proficient at needlecraft?

Married right out of high school with a family that soon followed caused me to put an art career on hold for more than 30 years. While living in Florida from 1986-1996, I designed and executed signs, designed logos, did architectural renderings and a few commissioned pieces, which somewhat filled the void. After moving to Western North Carolina in 1996, I took up wood carving to pass the time. Dabbling at best with painting from time to time, garnered a Merit Award at a local art show in 2001. Soon, managing a family-owned construction company and cabinet shop took up all my time until the death of my husband in 2007. Nearly two years of despair and depression followed until early 2009 when I met a man that breathed life back into my soul.

Gaddy Studios on Etsy began in 2009 as a joint venture with my husband David. We were so excited it led to many sleepless nights with thoughts of the many new projects we could craft spinning through our heads. Rising at four in the morning, bouncing ideas off each other, we’d be down in the workshop before the sun came up. Then tragedy struck when David was diagnosed with a debilitating disorder and had to stop his work. I halfheartedly continued to create but it just wasn’t the same. Then, recently I was introduced to Gina. She shares so many of the same interests and values as me, we quickly became best friends. She is a constant source of inspiration and ideas. Yes! I am excited about what I do again.

We are so fortunate to live in “The Land of Waterfalls” as it’s called. Within Transylvania County, there are over 250 named waterfalls. Inspiration lies right outside our front door. I love the unique characteristics of natural wood – knot holes, worm tracks, cracks, barked edges, etc. - that nature leaves behind over time and try to incorporate as much of these characteristics as possible to create truly one-of-a-kind pieces.

Along with my love for nature-inspired pieces, I am an antique junkie. If I had my way, the entire house would be filled with antiques. That and a trip to the landfill has inspired me to start a new line of renewed, repurposed home accents and furnishings from old, discarded & salvaged materials. Having two beautiful grandchildren (with another on the way) has made me realize how important it is to reduce the amount of waste that goes into our landfills.

From renewed, repurposed creations to shabby chic and country farmhouse to rustic natural to quirky and whimsical, you'll find it here at Gaddy Studios. You might even find a few paintings sprinkled throughout (when I get time to sneak into my art studio).

Thank you for visiting my shop and learning a little bit about Gaddy Studios.
