This mug is absolutely awesome! I asked GaeanAllusion regarding a mug for my son's birthday. The time frame was a little short, but they more than met the deadline with this beautiful custom mug. It's wonderful and very cherished by a life-long Seahawks fan. He loves it! Thank you so much!

About

Wheel thrown and hand decorated utilitarian pottery

Karen and Godfrey Betts, along with one of their five daughters, Freya, create charming and functional pottery pieces from their geodesic dome in Chehalis. Since 1990, Gaean Allusions Pottery has been producing hand thrown utilitarian pottery. With the support of their parents, grandparents and now their daughter, the business has truly been a family venture. The couple received their first wheel from Godfrey’s grandmother, Marie.

Godfrey, who throws the clay, studied at the University of Puget Sound with a major in computer science and a minor in ceramic arts. Karen, who studied illustration at Cornish College of the Arts in Seattle, uses a technique called sgraffito by applying layers of color and then scratching off parts of the layer to create contrasting textures. The business began as a means for the family to work together and travel to events.

Freya, who was born into the business, finds that her family’s strength results in different ways of thinking and unique ideas. Freya has drawn from the accumulated knowledge and experience of her parents and refined it with her own style and creativity. She has the skill to accomplish both of the tasks her parents do separately – throwing clay as well as carving and glazing it. Sometimes pieces are a collaboration of all three family members efforts.

The durable pottery is fired to 2230 degrees in our studio. All of the food safe and utilitarian pottery is microwave and dishwasher safe. Pottery is designed for both beauty and functionality.

Godfrey throws our ware on the potters wheel, I decorate each piece using both sgrafitto and glaze techniques. He built and maintains our geodesic dome studio.I sell our ware at Festivals and online. We are both Business & Life partners, married 36 years, in business as Gaean Allusions since 1990.
