I sewed it into a little blanket before washing, and since I wanted it to shrink up and pucker, I used hot water and a long dry cycle. I think it will get softer as it gets washed more, and I love that I can just throw it in the wash without worrying that it will fall apart.

I just received my fabric and it is not as soft as I expected.
We ship our fabric "flat" intentionally! All of our Sunny Double Gauze and Sunny Saloo fabrics will arrive ready-to-sew and are flat for easy handling. They will crinkle and soften after the first wash and will soften even more over time. We recommend sewing your item and then washing it (as opposed to pre-washing) because it is much easier to sew while the fabric is in its flat state.
If you overlooked the product description and washed your fabric before sewing, you probably have a very crinkled piece of fabric...but no worries! Simply press the fabric with a steam iron and your fabric will return to its flat state.

Care instructions
Wash alone or with LIKE COLORS ONLY to prevent lint transfer and excess pilling.
All of our fabrics can be machine washed and tumble dried. Like all cotton fibers, some shrinkage is expected (about 5%). Shrinkage can be minimized by washing in cold water and tumble drying on low.
Velcro and gauze are not friends! It is best to keep your gauze items away from Velcro or anything else that can catch and snag your fabric.
We recommend using a fabric softener when laundering gauze. Fabric softener will prevent static and keep your natural cotton gauze fibers soft over time.
What is the difference between Sunny Double Gauze and Sunny Saloo?
Sunny Double Gauze is a classic double gauze or muslin fabric commonly used in baby swaddle blankets. The fabric has one-inch grid lines woven throughout the textile. This fabric is available in 10 colors and is 52" wide.
Sunny Saloo is also a cotton gauze fabric, but it is a little different than your classic muslin. It is 40" wide, which is a smaller width than our double gauze. Our saloo does not have obvious grid lines throughout the fabric, which makes it a great choice for apparel or accessories where a grid-free surface is preferred. Saloo will crinkle after washing just like Sunny Double Gauze and other classic muslin swaddle fabrics.
