Mona Lisa & Geisha Fabulous Hair Accessories... The Story.
As a young child, I took to fashion at an early age, designing clothing with my mother and collecting unusual buttons from my grandmother's cabinets. My grandmother was from the Island of Maui and believed a girl should always wear a flower in her hair. In the islands, women traditionally wear a flower to signify their desirability - a flower adorned on the right side of a woman signifies that she is available for courtship; wearing a flower on the left side signifies that she is in a relationship... The plumeria flower also represents all things good and this is why my grandmother always believed we should wear a flower in our hair. Along with the buttons, my grandmother had drawers filled with fancy costume jewelry that she let me deconstruct and fashion them into upcycled jewelry and hair pieces.
By age fourteen, I was in the garage learning how to weld with my dad (who was a master welder). He taught me all the ways around metalwork. From there I took off and began working on my own pieces of experimental art. Over time, I realized it was an excellent way to create and make lasting jewelry.
While my inspiration started with my family, as I grew older I was very intrigued by the Japanese culture, specifically the Geisha inspired art and the Kanzashi hair ornaments which I learned about and studied in art history classes at Cabrillo College. I love rich colors and textures evoked by places like Japan and the pacific islands. I want women to wear my hair accessories and feel confident and beautiful in their own skin.
After twenty two years, I am still blessed to be doing what I love. I have taken all that has inspired me over the years and combined it into making wearable art for women. All of my hair accessories are built to last a lifetime, they are fashioned from the highest quality metals and are considered a collectible item to be passed down from generation to generation. I offer a high fashion hair accessory which caters to an array of women of all age ranges who appreciate a well made, lasting, museum quality item that will never lose its timeless appeal.
Every piece is handmade from high quality metals (brass, 14k gold, sterling silver etc.), enameled and adorned with upcycled jewels. Each has a metal signature on it which signifies its authenticity. My work has been featured in Smithsonian magazine, Glamour, Wedding and many other fashion-based magazines; I've been featured on TV and can also be seen at red carpet events including the Golden Globes. I've made hair pieces for several celebrities including Lady Gaga, Gwen Stefani, Mary Louise Parker & Taylor Swift.
Mahalo for taking the time to look at my hair accessories, I hope you found a piece that speaks to you which you can treasure for a lifetime. Please feel free to message me if you have any questions or would like a custom design made for you!
