About

geometry. color. mid-mod design.

I've always been a crafter, beginning when I was 4 years old helping my mom sew the leg back on to my toy bunny. Crafts that I love include: sewing, knitting, crocheting, cross-stitching, and embroidery. I was inspired to create the pieces of canvas art you see in my shop while trying to figure out a way to incorporate geometry into my son's nursery (and fill up a big empty wall).

I'm intrigued by how the perfection of geometry is interpreted by human hands, and how that perfection is slowly chipped away by our natural imperfections. We are not machines, we are in no way perfect beings, we are always evolving, and try as we might to create perfect works of art there's always something imperfect in our execution.

I feel like this is a great metaphor for today's social media-driven culture: we aspire to perfection, and we will always fail to achieve it. The social media feeds we see are snippets of people's lives curated to highlight an idealized human life (or just vanity) when we know just out of frame is the true humanity: imperfection. But, as I used to tell my high school math students, don't fear failure. It is only through failure that we learn and improve. Failure and imperfection are conditions of the human experience and to try to deny either is to miss out on living a full and colorful life. Imperfection creates beauty. Imperfection is sanity. Imperfection teaches you to accept reality as being beautiful and worthy of your attention, not just curated social media feeds.

I encourage my patrons/customers to meditate on how imperfectly perfect the pieces I create are. They are made by a human hand, they are products of their environment - the brushstrokes are evident, dust from the air gets trapped in the paint, yarn twists and untwists and felts as it is pulled through canvas - as we are all imperfect creations molded by our environment and circumstances. Yet both the artwork and the human remain beautiful regardless of our flaws. Strike that: we are beautiful BECAUSE OF our flaws.

I used to be a high school math teacher, but "retired" a few years ago to raise my family. I currently work part time as a group exercise instructor while doing this on the side for sanity.
