Announcement   Shop is now closed. Sorry if you missed out!

So folks are asking me why I'm closing at the end of the year. So let me explain to everyone why,

I'll start at the beginning with how I started dildo making and how the business has gone these preceeding 5 years. I'll also explain how one unhappy customer, and a fellow dildo maker helped seal my fate. I'll also answer some questions I've been asked the last few days since I decided to close shop at the end of the year.

It all started around 6 years ago at a TNG-Arizona kink party. For those who don't know what TNG is, It is a kink organization for people age 18 to 35-40 depending on which state you live in. A good friend of mine was sporting this awesome tentacle dildo in a strap-on harness made by Zeta Paws, and I thought it was the coolest thing ever! She loved the shape, but was bummed because is wasn't made in silicone, stank like shower curtain, and she always had to use it with a condom. I myself am allergic to both latex and phthalates, and had been buying Tantus toys for my sexual escapades for about a decade at that point. Having dropped out of college for Machine Tool Technology, I knew quite a bit about mold making. I decided I'd give making my own dildos a try.

Getting started as a dildo maker is an expensive process. Mixing raw silicone creates bubbles to you need a vacuum chamber, and vacuum pump. An acceptable quality chaber runs around $300, and the pump for it $200. Then there's the pigments that are as low as $20, but popular and more expensive pigments, such as black, can run up to $40 per color. Then ther's the silicone itself. $35 a pint is the smallest size you can buy. $200 for a gallon, $500 for 5 gallons. I spent $2,000 and 6 months to get myself started, due to several screwups and learning hard lessons along the way.

When I started I had a full time job managing Photo Labs for Walgreens. Making dildos was just an expensive hobby that I could do for myself, and sell pieces on Etsy to keep funding the hobby. I started with 4 shapes. The Hentai Tentacle inspired by and made for my TNG friend, and 3 tentacle butt plugs I made for myself. My sister found out what I was doing, and a couple months in made me some more shapes that were more female friendly, plus a couple sculptural shapes I thought would be fun. The Spheres of Love, Futher Down the Spiral, the Cunt Screw, the Traveling Gnome, and the Dark Invader became my lineup of first year toys. I just started, and I already had more shapes than any other individually ran dildo shop. I was so proud. I did $3000 in business that year before expenses, -$400 after.

Year two was pretty awesome. Folks started to notice I existed, and I was starting to get alot of traffic from social media. Bad Dragon Forums, Toypics, Tumblr, and Google search was sending a decent amount of business. I had a couple friends request some custom shapes, and the Stormy, and Horn shapes came about. I also figured out how to make my own double sided dildos. I came up with the brilliant idea of making spanking paddles out of silicone and they were very popular. Four months after releasing them Tantus took my idea and ran with it, making their own line of paddles. I was hurt that a company I had been supporting for several years took something from me, and no lawyer I consulted would take my case, because other than dates it would be near impossible to win since I lacked a patent, and paddles are such a generic item to begin with. At the same time though I was proud that I came up with something the leading competitor emulated. I did $8,000 in business $5,000 in profit. Not too shabby.

Year three was a financial and emotional rollercoaster for me. January was amazing I did $1,600 in business and came out with several more shapes. I decided in Febuary to leave my $25,000 a year gig with walgreens I had been doing for 13 years, and pursue making dildos full time. After quitting I decided I needed to get on social media to drive up my business. I hate social media, and prefer actual human contact. I decided to join Tumblr and Toypics because they were the sites I was getting the most traffic from. My traffic greatly increased and thing were going great until I got my first unhappy customer. She wanted a custom split that was quite more complex than I thought it was actually going to be. I tried my best, but apparently It wasn't up to her standards. She sent me a very angry message asking for me to remake it or refund her. I tried to explain to her that unlike every other maker out ther that I can't afford to. She then decided to create a very successful smear campaign over Tumblr and various other social media sites. She used memes and gifs, and was a well known reviewer and collecter. I tried do defend myself only to have her electronic friend attack me at every turn. I did a raffle offering store credit to try and up my followers and drive traffic back up. The winner did not want to be identified, so I got flammed again, and accused of not actually honoring the raffle. I quit tumblr for a couple months, but due to the low sales I started a new account in August. I think so far I've got 40 followers, so I gave up on social media. It was my best year despite that. I made $16.000 before expenses, $8,000 after.

In year four things got worse. I started being unable to fully pay my rent. In September my car broke down, and I couldn't afford to fix it. I had it towed, and used the money to make up some of my rent. Another small custom dildo maker started teaching others how to make they're own dildos at various Furry Conventions. I had to blow several hundred dollars and teach myself how to do it. Now I have another 5 or 6 competitors to fight against for business. The sad thing is he only lasted around a year and quit. Keyword Silicone Dildo on Etsy and see how many shops are on there now. When I started there were only 3. I made $8,000, $4,000 after expenses. Try living a year in America on only $4,000, I dare you. Those of you who have tell me and the next time we meet we can hug and have a cry together.

Now onto this year. I don't even really want to talk about it, but I will. Pure and complete shit. I''ve only done $5,000 before expenses so far. I am about $2,500 in debt to my roomate as of the start of this month. I've been trying to find a job, and applied to over 200 businesses within a 5 mile radius of where I live, as I don't have a car and public transportation is minimal where I live. I got 1 job interview out of all of them. They took one look at me, and said I was too overqualified. I have alot of visable tattoos. Nothing offensive in my opinion, but social stigma still remains for those with neck and hand tattoos. Plus my most recent job is as a dildo maker. I'm starting to understand how pornstars feel after they quit the industry and try to find work. See Don Cheadle bank loan scene in Boogie Nights.

So why am I stating I will most likely be closing at the end of the year? If the last two and a half years weren't enough of an indicator, I don't know what is. I'm giving folks a two month last chance to get what they want from me, and if I do $4,000 worth of business in that time, I'll consider it worth my while to keep the shop open. Since I've been averaging around $500 a month this year so far I doubt even with this writing I'll have an increase that large enough to inspire me to keep it up. If this inspired you to check out my work you can find it here. https://www.etsy.com/shop/GespenstsFantasyGear

Iv'e already been asked what I'm doing with the molds, and I'm reminded of vultures circling an animal that has wandered too far from the oasis. The answer is I'm keeping them. I started doing this as a hobby for myself, not some get rich scheme. If you bought or buy from me in the next couple months be proud you supported an independent toy maker, and that whatever you bought will increase in value due to low production number. Some shapes Iv'e only made one or two of. Since platinum silicone lasts for decades before the even start to degade they will go for a high price in a few decades for those who collect. I've seen older Bad Dragon pieces made before 3D printing go for quadruple their original prices. I'll still be making toys for myself, and for those in the local community, I'll still be vending at TNG and APEX events, I'll also be doing donation auction pieces towards the travel funds for Southwest Master and Slave, and other causes.

Before I finish my long rant on why Gespenst's Fantasy Gear will be no more, I'd like to thank a few people who really supported me, and inspired me to keep getting back on the horse. Octopuppy, you were my dildo muse, and I wouldn't have ever considered doing it if it wasn't for you. Crovax, you crazy motherfucker thanks for your frequent business, and for using my toys for the fucksaw classes you do along the east coast. 20% of my overall business has been to Virginia, and I owe that to you. SynjoDeonecros, for buying so many pieces from me. Tenebrax, for being such a cool Horse, and sculpting the Hentai Kitsune Dildo. I only have made 4 so far, but hopefully I'll be making more. Whippet, for funding the making of my Sybian/Motorbunny covers. It's sad I haven't sold more of them due to sybian immediately coming out with their own platinum silicone covers, but I forced them to make a change for the better, and I'm proud of that. I think mine are better designed still. APEX for allowing me to vend, and teach classes on insertables play, and safety, oh and being my home away from home. Lastly my leather family the Dragon Clan, for giving me emotional, nutritional, spiritual, and financial support. I love my leather brother and sisters.

Please feel free to cross post, love, bump, and generally promote me and this writing.

The split hardness is worth it- it's challenging without being a doorstopper. The shimmery red down the black looks awesome. The photos don't do it justice.

About

Artisan Made Dildos A.K.A. Screw China!

I started my shop several years ago because I had allergic reactions to alot of the toys out on the market, plus there were products that I wanted at the time that just didn't exist. After several months and a couple grand in research I created a product that was safe to use and my friends all wanted.

It became a fun and slightly profitable hobby that really took off, and allowed me to indulge in my love of sculpture and human sexuality. I have made products larger companies have emulated, and it's been quite flattering seeing my work affect big names in the sex toy industry. My business grew, and I made the daring decision to make adult toys by hand full time. I make a meager living doing it though. I don't own a car (can't afford one). Eat at home on a college student diet, and am in debt, and am consistantly late with rent, but I love what I do, and am a bit too stubborn to compromise my ideals.

I grew my shop from Artisan Ideals. Make my shapes from hand, instead of through machining and 3D Printing like most others do. Finding enjoyable shapes and forms in nature. Doing as much as I can by hand, and adding as much personal flair as I can into my shapes. I have Arthritic hands, and am not the greatest sculptor in the world, so most of my pieces come out uneven, but I think that adds alot of the charm to my work. I purposely leave some remnants of fingerprints in my shapes to remind people that these toys are human, and not machine made. I donate pieces to charities, and organization that support sexual freedom. And have made custom non adult toys for Autistic children, and fidget toys for children with severe Attention Deficit Disorder. All out of my love for giving back to the community.

I use American made products to produce my work as well. My raw silicone, and the pigments I use to color it are both made in the US, a rare thing these days, as all we seem to produce now is, well, produce :P This is not cheap material to work with. My profit margin is around 100% which sounds big, but the industry standard is 500% thank you China :( I have to charge so low just to compete with larger companies. I've tried offering wholesale, but it's just not worthwile to do so as an artisan running a single man shop.

I make alot of objects for an Artisan run shop, and try to keep at least 30 items available for custom ordering. Most similar shops only offer 4 or 5 shapes. I've made about 60 different products so far, but with such a large selection I think most shoppers become overwhelmed. Periodically I have to take down the shapes that don't sell well, so if you see something you like, don't wait on buying it, because it could be the last one I make. I also only make one mold of any particular shape, so if the mold gets damaged, and it's happened a few times, that's the end of it. This makes my work more rare, and collectable in the long term.

Thank you for your support of my work, and I hope to keep my dream alive.

I'm an insertables fetishist that is allergic to latex and phthalates. Bored with the selection of Platinum Silicone toys commercially available, I decided to make my own, and create a shop to help further fund my fetish.
