About

Artful Greeting Cards Inspired by Nature

My name is Laura and I am a biologist by trade and an avid gardener in my free time. I find so much beauty in the plant world and I love to translate that into colorful drawings. I have an ancestor who was a school teacher and fraktur artist in Pennsylvania in the 1800s. Fraktur is a type of folk art, often drawn as ‘illuminations’ to celebratory documents such as birth certificates and house blessings in the lives of the Pennsylvania Germans. When I moved to Pennsylvania for my work, I became very interested in fraktur art and started drawing flowers and hearts in this style. Eventually, my style became more my own, but retaining the inked outline and watercolors of the fraktur artists.

Most of my drawings are from my imagination. Some mimic the botanical illustration of old herbals and pharmacopoeia, but with imaginary plants and plant structures. Some are botanically correct drawings, but with fantastical colors…. My only rule is that the drawings be fun and colorful.

I like to make drawings in series of four. So, while you can buy any card individually, you can also buy them as a set of four related designs. If that doesn’t strike your fancy, choose the mix-and-match listings and choose whatever cards you like. I print my cards on acid-free paper with archival pigment inks, so feel free to frame them to display.

And my shop name? One of my favorite trees is Ginkgo biloba, the Maidenhair tree. It is an ancient species with fossils of its elegant leaves dating back 270 million years. And with a name like Laura… how could I resist naming my shop Ginkgo by Laura?
