About

GlassArts Studio: Childhood Origins

After receiving my PhD in genetics in 1979, I was employed in the pharmaceutical industry working in new drug discovery and development until I retired in 2009. Around 1985, my father-in-law taught me the basics of the copper foil technique for stained glass. I was hooked!

The origin of GlassArts Studio can be traced back to my childhood where I attended a Catholic school through grade 8. I spent many, many hours admiring the stained glass windows and colorful mosaics in that church. I believe that experience has led to a life-long admiration of all things glass.

Upon retiring in 2009, I started GlassArts Studio to provide a means of marketing my glass creations. Prior to that I made numerous glass pieces for friends, family, and our own home. These included stained glass lamps, backsplashes, glass mosaics for outside and inside installations, and many panels...some as large as 3' by 6'.

I never really thought about selling my work until 2009 after visiting a gallery sponsored by the Chester County Art Association (CCAA). I was encouraged to contribute a few pieces to the gallery and they quickly sold! I was amazed! That's when I realized there indeed was a market for my work and I began exploring additional marketing venues. That's when I joined Etsy.

In 2010, I participated in a show sponsored by the CCAA. I sold two pieces at that show, but more importantly a curator from a local gallery saw my work and offered to include my work in their gallery. I was thrilled! Since then, that gallery has sold many of my glass mosaic creations and continues to do so. I have also sold many pieces through the two galleries operated by the CCAA. In addition, I am represented by several gift shops which regularly sell my pieces. Owing to this exposure, I have also had the opportunity to create special pieces on commission, such as a glass mosaic vanity mirror matching the client's stained glass windows, various other glass mosaic mirrors and panels, as well as stained glass panels.

I love the reflective qualities of glass and include colored mirror glass in many of my creations. I also like to include lots of texture in my pieces for added interest. I will put whatever objects into a piece that I see add to the composition and feel of the piece. My subjects can be almost anything, but I am especially drawn to the beach, ocean, and water because of its motion and reflectivity. Again, I am sure that goes back to my childhood as well, growing up near the ocean in Massachusetts and regularly visiting the beach and fishing in the Atlantic Ocean.

It is very gratifying to sell my work because I know it will bring some everlasting beauty and joy to the purchaser. Why else would they buy it? The feeling is very similar to have contributed to the development of a new drug that helps many, many sick people.

If you have read this far, I commend you for your patience! Thanks for visiting my Etsy store, and please continue to support the arts in any way you can.

After a lengthy career in pharmaceutical R&D, I retired in 2009 and started GlassArts Studio to market my creations in glass. I also very much enjoy working closely with clients on custom commissions, something special just for them!
