RC Art Glass Living the Dream
Roger Child—About the Artist
Roger has always been drawn to art. As a child, he was always drawing and sketching. An elementary school teacher asked him what he wanted to be, and he immediately replied ‘an artist.’ As a career, he became a cabinetmaker and through that work discovered glass. He found that he could interpret his visions more easily using glass as a medium for artistic expression.
Roger grew up in Ogden, Utah, and has been a full time lampworker for 16 years. He discovered the magical world of lampworking glass during the summer of 1998 and instantly fell in love with working hot glass in the flame of a torch. Using Moretti soft glass, he began making glass beads and marbles in his spare time. After working as a cabinetmaker for 12 years, in the spring of 2003, he decided to put away his workworking tools and devote himself to the art of lampworking. He creates distinctive works of art using both soft glass and borosilicate glass.
Inspired by nature and fantasy, he hand-makes his glass beads, marbles, and sculptures one at a time using lampworking techniques. "I enjoy making a lot of sea life, he said, like sea turtles and fish. I strive to make each piece unique.” They are made from Moretti Italian glass, Lauscha glass, borosilicate glass, or any other glass he can get his hands on.
Roger mostly learned glass techniques by reading books and magazines, and watching videos. Artists who influenced him include the hot glass sculptors Milon Townsend, Lewis Wilson, Loren Stump, and Paul Stankard. He learned a great deal from books by Milon Townsend and he is 98% self-taught.
Owner, Lampworker, Photography, Shipping, Sales
My inspiration comes from nature, and I create a lot of sea life pieces. The beauty of nature has always spoken to me and has been dear to my heart. I also find inspiration in fantasy and thinking outside the box.
