Announcement   Global Gypsy specialize in unique hand made jewelry using macrame techniques and silver-work. Using semi precious stones, seeds, and other found materials we endeavor to create original and long lasting pieces of wearable art. A couple from Australia and Panama, we find our inspiration in the beauty of nature and through travelling. Many of our unique designs are influenced by the local cultures and art of the places we visit. We have spent years travelling through Central America as artisans making and selling our jewelry along the way and expanding our art as we go. We are currently based in Melbourne, Australia but do continue our passion for travel. We hope you will love looking around.

Check out more of us, our art and travels on facebook! And if your in Melbourne Australia find out what markets we are doing and our macrame workshops!!

www.facebook.com/MacrameJ

We are also now doing macrame classes in Melbourne! So check out our facebook site for the current classes!

The technique used in most of our designs is called Macrame. Although sometimes referred to as ‘Chinese knotting’, the history of macramé dates back long before it was discovered in China. It is believed to have had originated in Arabia during the 13th century. When the Moors conquered Spain in 711 AD, they brought this artform with them. From Spain, it spread to other European countries. Sailors then picked up on the technique and kept it alive over the years. While out to sea, these sailors would knot thick twine into decorated pieces that could be sold or traded when they went ashore.
Today a micro macrame is being used to make art in central and south america, where travelling artisanos make a living selling their colorful and unique designs in the streets.

Many of the stones we use are from Central America and have been collected during our travels. The ambar comes from the Chiapas region in Mexico. . We only use the highest quality waxed string from Brazil so that the pieces we make will last a lifetime.

We use sterling silver from Bali and our feathers mostly come from friends who own properties and collect them for us....We always try to find them from cruelty free, reliable sources.
