About

It's all about the hunt.

Q. What type of person spends their free time with two small children in a thrift shop?
A. Probably a crazy one! I do it because I LOVE history and all things historic. Before having children, I studied curation and worked as a museum educator in historic house museums in my home state of Connecticut. My day job now is teaching early American history to 7th graders in an urban school district. I surround my self with history. I live in a 103 year old house in my town's historic district. I appreciate the value of preserving history and am attracted to the aesthetics of yesteryear.

Q. So, how did this shop happen?
A. In the space between working at the museum and public school teaching, I was home full time with my babies. This gap gave me the invaluable opportunity not only to be with my babes but also to find creative outlets of all kinds! I crocheted and sewed and crafted to my heart's content. I began learning to make clothing for my daughter (I am not a fan of girl's clothes off the rack). Before dropping some serious cash on fabrics, I started buying skater tshirts from the thrift shop and cutting them up for fabric. The resulting dresses got a lot of attention. People stopped us constantly to ask where I purchased her dresses from. The lightbulb lit and "Gnarly Nutmeggers" was born.

Q. Where do the vintage clothes come in?
A. The upcycled dresses were a hit and I started spending more time in thrift shops looking for tshirts and on Etsy browsing other shops, including vintage shops. I already had a sizable collection of vintage children's clothes that my kiddos had already outgrown and decided to list a few items from my collection. They sold. While tshirt shopping, I began to buy a few vintage adult pieces each trip and listing them on Etsy. They sold. The thrill of discovering pristine vintage clothing with modern appeal soon took over and I've never looked back.

Q. Where are all the up cycled dresses now?
A. That ship has sailed for the time being. I made almost 80 dresses and sold them online and at fairs. It was fun but with full time work it is just not feasible.

Q. What on Earth is a Nutmegger?
A. A person from the Nutmeg State, Connecticut.

  • Ms. Nutmegger

    Owner, Curator, Photographer

I'm Lana. I hunt and gather vintage clothing in the Nutmeg state. I love quirky patterns! Thanks for browsing my carefully curated collection for Etsy : )

  • Wee Nutmeggers

    Co-Captains Of The Thrift Team

The gnarliest of Nutmeggers, seriously. After years of being dragged to thrift shops, these two have developed an uncanny ability to spot vintage threads. They have also picked up a love of 80s neon fanny packs and 70s glam sequins.

  • My Fair Nutmegger

    Model

This is Sarah! She is Ms. Nutmegger's "little" cousin and the Wee Nutmeggers' Nanny. Bonus: she looks good in every decade. Some girls have all the luck...
