What could be sweeter than growing up on a commercial honey farm? The farm was a magical place where the bees shared their liquid gold, the sheep grazed the pastures and the chickens ran free. After the farm was sold, my mother commented that what she missed most was the chickens…feeding them kitchen scraps, collecting the eggs and simply watching the passing parade of poultry. For this reason, I decided to sew her a pair of funky chickens with long skinny legs. These chickens with their knobby knees, big feet, floppy combs and paired wattles became a hit. I found myself changing course, however, as my favorite time of the year was approaching. With a few pattern adjustments, I designed and created a Christmas gnome having found inspiration in the book entitled Gnomes by Wil Huygen and Rien Poortvliet. This book found a home with each of my many Dutch relatives! These fantastical little woodland men and women with their red pointy hats captured my imagination. My obsession stirred up doubts that Christmas could not possibly be the only time of year that we see them. I pictured gnomes in a variety of places and in a variety of roles including celebrations, holidays and professions, wearing an interesting array of hats to protect their heads and more importantly, their eyes. The gnomes you see in my shop are each designed and handcrafted by me. Please visit often to see what they have been up to!
