Announcement   Welcome to The Key Historic! - (formerly Goat & Kettle) - Most of the old keys you see here come from sometime between the late-1800's & the 1970's. They've unlocked antique padlocks & steamer trunks, opened clocks & cabinet doors, secured old cash registers & bank boxes, & now they've been fashionably repurposed to be worn by you!

If you don't see the exact style or size combination you're looking for, send me a message and I'll work with you to pick out your own key and make something perfect. For now, enjoy browsing the many styles, reading about the histories of the old American companies, and picking out your favorite (the hardest part). If you purchase a ring from Corbin, Yale, Eagle, Russell & Erwin, Master Lock, or Sargent, the ring will come with a history card that tells the company story and has a picture of the original factory buildings!

In addition to our authentically antique, repurposed keys, we now offer a few of our rarest styles as historic reproductions in bronze or sterling silver. These rings are listed in the section "Historic Reproductions" - be sure to check them out!

To learn more about the ring-making process, the powder-coated finish, or just general shop policies and FAQs, check out our policies page at http://etsy.me/14t7lsx.

About

A shop that began in my grandfather's garage...

Many years ago I visited my grandfather at his quaint country home in the small town of Lewistown, Pennsylvania. My wife Lauren wasn't able to accompany me because of work, so I wanted to bring her back a fun souvenir. After much searching I was unable to find a gift that was more thoughtful than a sampling of my favorite hometown potato chips and birch beer!

My last hope was an Amish Flea Market. Walking up and down the aisles of antiques, I knew I couldn't bring back something large - but not even the small wares had that personal touch I was searching for. Then I stumbled on a weathered crate full of old antique keys. My wife has always loved unusual jewelry, and especially longer, intricate rings - and these keys were beautiful! The engraving, the patina, the different shapes - I knew they would make a great piece if I could pull it off - so I bought three of them.

With my grandfather's help, and after breaking the first two keys, I carefully pounded out the first successful antique key ring in the garage. Needless to say, my wife LOVED it, and so has everyone who has seen her wearing it over the years. Slowly more and more requests turned into a full-time business! We now do 80+ shows per year and have our very own Etsy shop - here! And that first ring? She still wears it almost every day. Now you can get one of your very own!

Additional policies and FAQs
SIZING
We know it's hard to buy jewelry, especially a ring, without trying it on. Because of this, we do our best to measure the size of each ring so you can find one that fits you. If you aren't sure what size you are, please take a look at this PDF that has the "string" method instructions and a chart for finding your ring size on any finger: http://www.fredmeyerjewelers.com/Assets/Pdfs/ring-size-finder.pdf. We do not "officially" recommend trying to resize rings since there is a chance resizing could damage the powder-coated layer or crack the metal - but it is possible for small adjustments. Attempted re-sizing will make a ring non-returnable / exchangable.

CUSTOM SIZES
If you like a certain style in our shop, but we don't have one in your exact size, just send us a message and we'll work with you to pick out a similar style of key (or the closest available). Once we decide on your perfect key, we'll make it especially for you, in your preferred size, for no additional charge!

ENGRAVING
We can hand stamp anything you like on any custom order (not on already shaped rings). How does it work? Send us a message with the size you'd like, a style of key you'd prefer (if there is one) and what you'd like it to say (capital letters, numbers 0-9, and the & sign are available). We'll then send you a picture of the keys that would work for you to choose from. All engraving (unlimited characters) is just $5 extra.

THE PATINA
These keys are old! Many of them were at least partially covered in rust before we polished and fired them, leaving beautiful pitting that can only come with real age. Though the rust and dirt have been vanquished, the signs of their past existence remain. Do remember, however, that our pictures are taken at extremely close-up angles to show you the details of the product. Some of the tiny details you might see (dust particles, scratches, pitting, patina, etc) in the pictures may not be visible to the naked eye.

THE FINISH
Because we want them to last a long time, all of our antique key rings are powder-coated! This is an environmentally friendly, electrostratically applied, professional grade, extremely durable polymer clear-coat that uniformly covers the whole ring! Along with protection from scratches, elements, and wear, it gives each ring a smooth feel and a slightly glossy finish. They will NOT turn your finger weird colors!

METAL SENSITIVITY
Even if you know you are sensitive to metals or if you've had problems with jewelry on your skin in the past, our rings will be just fine! All of our rings are either steel or brass, but since each one of our rings is powder-coated, your skin never actually comes into contact with the metal itself. Sensitive skinned people can wear our rings with no problems.

THE LISTINGS
In addition to selling here on Etsy, I also do 4-5 markets per month. This means the rings listed here do move quickly, so if you see one you want it is very likely that it won't be around in the shop for long. Each one is one-of-a-kind, so be sure to purchase your favorites today!

GIVING BACK
Help TKH give a goat to a family in need! In countries like Haiti and Kenya, goats nourish a family with protein-rich milk, cheese, and yogurt, and can offer a much-needed income boost by providing offspring and extra dairy products for sale at the market. They even provide fertilizer that can dramatically increase crop yields! At TKH, we commit a percentage of our profits to purchasing goats through Heifer International, a humanitarian organization dedicated to ending world hunger and poverty (www.heifer.org). If only we could give kettles too!
