About

Mala Beads & Meditation

Hi, my name is Heather the Founder/Owner of Golden Lotus Mala. My mission is to help meditators and yogis become relaxed, centered, and in the moment with the use of beautiful mala beads and bracelets. I am an artist at heart and my creative process comes from within. I thoroughly enjoy working with gemstones and crystals to create the perfect combination of energy and healing stones for each design I make. I am happy to share that every item in my shop is handmade personally by me with loving care and peaceful intentions, attention to detail and high quality craftsmanship.

What is a mala?
A mala is used during meditation, it can be worn as a necklace or used to count mantra or prayer. Traditionally a mala has 108 beads plus a "guru" bead. The 108 beads are significant for many different reasons ranging from ideas related to the soul, the chakras, spiritual practices, feelings, chemistry, astrology and more. The guru bead, which is located above the tassel, is often seen as a sign of respect or good attitude of mind towards a spiritual teacher. Malas will also have additional beads, these are referred to as spacer or intervals and usually placed within a division of the number 108. For instance, 27 beads, 1 interval bead, 27 beads, and so on. Dividing the beads up allows for the meditator to keep count of their prayers and mantras. Malas can also be made in different sizes such as the wrist mala with 21 or 27 beads, or a half mala with 54 beads, and custom designs can feature whatever numerical value the practitioner needs.

What is a mantra?
The word mantra can be broken down into two parts: “man,” which means mind, and “tra,” which means transport or vehicle. In other words, a mantra is an instrument of the mind—a powerful sound or vibration that you can use to enter a deep state of meditation. The most popular mantra is reciting the words "Om Mani Padre Hum", it is the mantra of the Tibetan Buddhist embodiment of compassion and to think compassionately towards all beings in the universe. Mantra can sometimes be referred as an intention like, "I am strong," "I am worthy," or "I am full of love and peace". These mantras can help the practitioner maintain a connection to the state they wish to cultivate during their time of meditation.

What is meditation?
Mediation is very down-to-earth and practical and is available to anyone regardless of what religion you practice. It is a way of getting to know yourself that can transform and reveal your life in a new perspective. In all areas, physical, mental, emotional, psychological, and spiritual, meditation has the potential to ease your suffering and help you create a richer and more fulfilled life.

The practice of meditation on the breath is thousands of years old, basically, you meditate on your breath in order to give your mind something to ‘hang on to’ when it starts to jump from one thought to another. Training your mind in this way helps you focus on one thing at a time, and develops your powers of concentration.

Just 10 minutes - a simple breath meditation:
Start this breathe meditation by sitting for ten minutes daily. You will naturally build up to longer sessions over time. Find a quiet place at home where you will not be disturbed. Wear your mala during meditation or count through the beads to help maintain focus on the moment. Choose loose-fitting, comfortable clothes to wear. You will need a cushion or straight-back chair.

Sit cross-legged on a cushion with your bottom slightly raised. Keep your back straight, your shoulders level and relaxed and your chin parallel to the floor. Lower your eyes and focus about three-feet in front of you or close your eyes. Rest your hands gently on your knees. Breathe normally through your nose, using your abdomen rather than your chest. Check your posture and relax any part of your body that is tense. Begin counting your breath on each exhalation, when you reach ten, begin again. Thoughts will intervene and when they do, simply let them go and return to counting your breath. As you count, you can guide the beads through your fingers one at a time to help keep focus, or recite a mantra/prayer if you desire. After ten minutes or so, end your session.

If you have any questions about mala beads or meditation, feel free to contact me. Thank you for stopping by my shop today, I hope you enjoyed your visit.

Kind Regards,
Heather

Care instructions

Like any cherished or sacred item treat your mala with care, store it in a safe place when not using or wearing.

Do not wear your beads while exercising or when practicing any strenuous activities as they may get caught on something and break.

Keep your mala out of water, this is especially important if you have a wood or seed mala as the organic material will break down and shorten the lifespan and beauty of the beads.

Gemstone and crystal beads are fragile and can be broken if dropped or exposed to extreme pressures.

If you need to clean your mala, use a lightly damp cloth and carefully wipe over the beads and tassel.
