About

From the Tibetan Grassland to the Kansas Prairie

I was born and raised in the Golok region of Amdo (Eastern) Tibet. I spent the beginning of my life as a nomad living simply among yak, sheep, goats, and horses on the grassland. At age 8, my root Lama found me and I joined his monastery. From that time on, I was instructed in the Dharma and also the Sacred Arts of Tibetan Buddhism. One of my most influential teachers was a famous calligrapher throughout Amdo. His beautiful renditions of the scriptures sparked in me a fire to create- not only traditional works, but also more artistic representations of the Buddha's teachings. I spent nearly 20 years in the monastery, in retreat, study, and prayer. Now I continue those practices as a layman, with the support of my wife and our son, a constant inspiration to me to live in the present wonderful moment. I have recently been able to devote more time to my calligraphy, and have enjoyed the new materials that are available in the West. Now in America, I look forward to living both here and in Tibet, continuing the lineage of traditional Tibetan art so that it may thrive. For me, my calligraphy is a way of meditation, through the control of my body in writing, and my mind, in concentration. May these traditional and contemporary works be reminders along your path.
