About

A Gallery of Cats In Clay!

I am a self taught ceramic artist who purchased my first kiln in Chicago in 1985 because I could get it wholesale and the price was unbelievable: $237!
Then, I purchased some books, asked alot of questions, got a block of clay, 5 gallons of ceramic slip, a few molds and went to work learning this new medium.
I have a background in printmaking and I wanted to combine the 2 mediums. Through trial and error, after several months, I came up with the method I use to make my clay jewelry, which combines printing my original designs on clay and coloring with pigments in a watercolor manner and adding a clear glaze. Each piece is fired in the kiln 3-4 times.
I poured a lot of my own molds at my studio, but with my age, the heavy lifting and breathing clay dust has convinced me for health reasons, to purchase some pieces in bisque from other ceramic studios to paint and glaze. I still do all of the designing, painting, glazing and firing myself.
I LOVE CATS!!!! As you can probably tell if you visit my shop www.GoodNiteGracie.Etsy.Com . I currently have 4: Mr. E, Nala, Puss and Sassy. Occasionally you will see them in my listings. And sometimes they will steal a pair of earrings and cause a problem! Earrings appear to be more fun than Catnip.
I hope you will enjoy my work. Stop by often.

I am a Self-Taught ceramic artist from Michigan. A friend who owns a ceramic studio calls me "An accident waiting to happen." I'm sure she means that as a compliment, right?

Frequently asked questions

Is everything handmade?

Yes, everything in my shop is handmade by me in my home studio. I do all of the painting with high fire pigments on earthenware clay (either slab-rolled or slip-cast). Everything is glazed by hand and kiln fired in one of my 3 electric kilns. My designs are original and all have been copyrighted by me. If you see any of these designs, you will find my initials "GMS" somewhere on the piece.
