Home-grown Kentucky Gourd Art and Craft-Ready Dried Gourds

I got started working with gourds years ago. A friend gave me a bottle gourd that she had grown herself. I took it home and painted it as a snowman. I've been hooked on gourd art ever since.
Now I grow my own gourds. I get excited at the end of the growing season when it's time to pick the gourds after the vines dry. Each gourd is unique and when I look at each one I see something different. I get a mental image of what I'd like to do with it and hope that I can achieve that. There's nothing more satisfying than to hear someone say "Wow! I really like that! It's different."
The first thing I usually have to do with the gourds is wash them in warm sudsy water. This is done in the spring or later after the gourds have completely dried and developed a loose skin. I have to scrub the mold and skin off. Now the gourd is ready to be used.
My favorite material to use with the gourds is Quikwood putty. It dries hard within 15-20 minutes so I have to work very quickly. I also use other types of air-dry clays because the putty is more expensive to use. I also use Apoxie Sculpt. It is similar to Quikwood but has a longer working time of 2-3 hours before drying hard. It is becoming my favorite medium to use, especially on my outdoor projects.
I try to be unique in what I do. I'm sure there may be similar pieces of gourd art out there but everything I make comes from my own ideas. I often lay awake at night thinking of new ways to design my gourds. I have so many ideas right now I feel like my head could burst!
At this time my shop is in our basement. I have several tables set up on which to work. I use a drill press and different cutting tools on my gourds. Most of the time these are used when making the birdhouses and feeders.
As for now, I'll just keep on growing my gourds and hope that I can make people smile or laugh when they see my finished "made in America" product!
