From the design decisions a the very beginning to the final piece Teresa was a joy to work with. Her talent is endless and her patience with my requested changes appreciated! I ordered 3 very special pieces and each one is uniquely and perfectly made. The quality of work and silver used is amazing and the finish perfectly beautiful. I can't help but stare at my wrist in awe at how stunning my military memorial cuff truly is... My daughters graduation cuff is truly special and my moms mothers day cuff is just perfect! Thank you Teresa! I can't wait to design my next piece with you!!

Have you seen my new Chunky Story Cuff? It's solid sterling, and wider than the original. This photo is a custom Chunky Story Cuff graduation bracelet featuring my original illustration of cherry blossoms as well as my dip-pen calligraphy.
This custom graduation gift has a secret, handwritten message from the graduate's family etched on the inside. I love creating special orders like this, knowing it will be treasured forever. womanskin-tone-2mortar_board

About

Poetic Metal: Wear Your Story

My poetic, wearable stories are inspired by lovelorn letters, forgotten hoards and treasured reliquaries. My work explores themes of legacy, memory, isolation and loss. I am particularly fond of incorporating handwriting, words and illustration in my designs, as well as motifs from my childhood in rural Ohio such as insects, weeds, erosion and ephemera.

...

I felt a call to jewelry design after two decades working in digital media as a graphic designer, illustrator and animator; I was burned out, and working with metals provided an analog respite from my high tech day job.

After the death of my teen stepson, Adam, I poured my grief into my burgeoning metalwork. I etched a handwritten message into a stack of bracelets in his honor, so that I might wear his memory on my arms. Adorning myself with this talisman brought me comfort. From within this loss, I found my voice as an artist — and this was Adam's final gift to me.

As a child, I was enchanted by my grandmother's bookcase. Opening its doors was like peering into a time capsule; it was stuffed with antique poetry tomes, mysterious snapshots, tintypes, funeral cards and elaborately penned letters. Even before I could read, 19th century line engravings of gossamer angels and tempest-tossed boats drew me into a grown-up world of mortality and miracles. I spent many sullen, snowy Saturdays transcribing stanzas of Browning and Poe, trying to imitate the penmanship of my long-dead ancestors. Many decades later, my Saturdays have scarcely changed.

Growing up, my family was full of humble creatives. A poetry-reciting farmer, loom artist, mechanical inventor and pet portrait painter were all at work in my midst– I was inspired to follow suit. I tried my hand at just about every art form, from writing poetry to glassblowing.

Elements of my rural upbringing also find their way into my work. I spent much of my youth on my grandparent's defunct Ohio farm, exploring buzzing pastures and coaxing butterflies to my fingertips. I sang quietly in the silent barn full of sparkling dust and rusted junk. I played in my grandfather's rickety workshop, its ceiling strewn with burnt vacuum tubes, 40s hubcaps and glass doorknobs; when the wind blew, the whole place winked and tinkled like a scrapheap chandelier.

Though I work with many metals and methods, I am particularly fond of etching my own handwritten messages and original illustrations into silver and bronze. Many of my etchings start with lose sketches, then I move directly to carving the design using a variety of methods such as scraping into a special tar. I allow the images to emerge in a stream-of-consciousness flow, and I enjoy discovering, just as an observer might, each line and turn as it appears from within the blackness.

Pastures and poetry, butterflies and books, grief and grace inspire my lyrical bracelets, necklaces and rings. I hope you will find your talisman among them, or invite me to create one for you.
