Artisan textile and object creations

I grew up on an orchard in the Central Tablelands of NSW, Australia.
Always creative, I first fell in love with felt when I was in a dental surgery, scouring the pages of Vogue Living, during my Bachelor of Design degree through COFA, UNSW. I discovered felt, but not as I had ever known it before - it was contemporary, raw, tactile and beautiful - a far cry from the commercial craft felt I had experienced as a child. From the day I drooled over those glossy pages, I was determined to use this incredible textile medium in my design practice, and I went all the way to the Netherlands to pursue that dream. There, in 2013, I interned for four months with Dutch felt artist Claudy Jongstra, who helped me to hone my creative instincts and believe that I was capable of starting my own creative studio.

I returned to my home in the Blue Mountains, Australia, and started my business with nothing but a lot of wool from my family sheep farm to get me started. After a lot of practice, trial and error, I launched my first range of cushion covers through Etsy in March 2014.
All of my products are handmade by me in my studio in the Blue Mountains, with the exception of the porcelain Cosy cup, which I outsource to a local ceramic studio.
I am passionate about sustainable design practice and this is reflected in my use of renewable bio-degradable materials including wool, natural plant dyes and sourcing of naturally coloured, local Australian fleeces such as alpaca, corriedale and mohair.

My ethos stems from the ancient Aboriginal proverb "touch the earth lightly". This means to be gentle to the earth, to treat it with respect, to take that which is replenishable and leaves no void. It means to leave the earth in the condition it was in when we arrived on it, so that it remains beautiful and healthy for future generations.

Discovering felt on the pages of that magazine was my lightbulb moment - it opened my mind to many creative possibilities I hadn't previously considered. My hope is that deep in the fibres of a cushion I have made with my hands I can impart a little of that initial joy I experienced within the pages of that magazine, so you too can feel a true appreciation for unique, handmade and sustainable design.

Most importantly, I hope you enjoy my products as much as I enjoy making them for you!

Returns and exchanges
The greatest of care is taken in the packaging of your items, however for peace of mind I advise insurance for each item as I am not responsible for shipping errors such as items lost or damaged in transit. Please ask if you would like to add insurance to your postage.

It is always my best endeavour to describe and photograph the items in the Grace Wood Designs shop such that you can be sure of your purchase. I do understand that sometimes a return is required and in the event that you would like to return the item for a refund please notify me within seven days of receipt of the item. Any costs incurred in returning the item such as postage and insurance will be the responsibility of the purchaser. The refund (less actual postage paid to ship the item if it has been posted) will be processed within 7 days of when the item is received by me in its original condition so I recommend you use registered or express post platinum for the additional security this provides.

Custom made items cannot be refunded unless faulty.

Items lost in the post will unfortunately not be able to be refunded. If the item was insured I will be happy to make you another item once the claim is paid, where possible an near-exact copy will be made (cannot be exact due to the nature of felt).

In the unlikely circumstance that the item I ship is left unclaimed by the buyer and finds its way back to me I will make best endeavours to contact the buyer and if this fails I will refund the buyer the purchase price less the actual shipping cost or shipping fee, whichever is higher (given that I did post the item and it is the responsibility of the buyer to pick it up or receive delivery).
Payment for Grace Wood Design Studio purchases is via credit card. Please arrange payment at time of order.

Please advise of any payment issues if they arise.

Non payment will result in the item being relisted as a cancelled order.
Postage is within two to four weeks of placing an order. Larger items such as bed covers and blankets will incur this time frame, cushion covers and table runners require less production time. If you need an item urgently, please message me before purchasing and I will do my best to accommodate you.

Standard shipping used by Grace Wood Design Studio within Australia is via Australia Post and may be Regular Post, Registered Post (this requires signature on delivery) or Express Post.

If Express Post is required please use this option at checkout.

Shipping Internationally postage and insurance costs vary by country so please contact me for a shipping quote for any item you would like to purchase.

Any fees such as those imposed by customs or quarantine including taxes, tariffs, duties, country entry charges, etc for items shipped internationally are the responsibility of the customer. Please make yourself aware of any potential fees and changes you may incur on importing the product as we do not take responsibility for this aspect of your purchase. Returns will not be accepted due to customs fees.
Additional policies and FAQs
All items are made in a pet free and smoke free home.

Wool and alpaca fleece used are raw materials and in most cases have not been sterilised. Wool and alpaca fleece often contain small articles of plant matter that have been missed in the cleaning process. Grace Wood Design Studio omits the use of toxic chemicals in the dyeing and felting process. Environmentally friendly non-allergenic detergents are used in the felting process. Eucalyptus oil is sometimes used in washing and rinsing cycles.

What is felt?
Felt is wool and other animal fibres that has been matted together through a deliberate agitation process.

What does felt feel like?
It is very soft and can be quite dense and thick, or thinner and finer.

Do you supply samples?
For international buyers I will provide small samples of the felt itself, and depending on supply, in colours/patterns requested, and at the cost of the customer.

If you have any further questions please contact me prior to purchase.
Feel free to contact me regarding consignment inquiries or Custom orders.

Thank you
