Announcement   Each artwork, bead or figurine, is hand sculpted in hot glass. All the detail has been added hot in the flame, there are no paints applied afterward. Each piece represents hours of hot sweaty labor, often ending in another piece in the trash.
These zoological characters seem to have a pearl of wisdom to share with us.
Like a walk in the woods, my work seeks to connect us to our wild roots.

We are on the road for six months of the year. We pull a 40' trailer with limited space for art. The T Rex is perfect for our style of life. I already owned a number of Cleo Creatures, so I gnu the T Rex would be a fun piece with great detail.

About

Art glass to wear, fondle and collect

Cleo Dunsmore Buchanan’s work is glass, there are no paints, no coldworking, no vitreous enamels used. Every detail has been applied in the flame, while the work is hot. While her work may be petite, the character and spirit it captures is grand.

Inspired always by animals, Cleo endeavors to capture the moment of wonder we experience when we come upon wildlife on a walk in the woods. Darsan is a word for a moment of sacred connection with a deity or a holy person. Cleo feels Darsan with animals, and finds her spiritual center with their guidance.

Each animal she depicts in glass has a medicine, or a lesson to teach. Cleo makes the animal she needs, striving to give each glass creation life-like vitality.

I grew up creating animals in my mother’s clay studio. I drove an art car, wrote 8 novels, and have designed jewelry since 1991. In 2003, I bought a hot head and some glass rods. I happily tossed aside other interests to devote myself to glass.

Additional policies and FAQs
Q: why isn't your glass shiny?
A: My work is glass, which has been treated with acid to create the matte surface. This gives it more realism, and a delicious tactile quality hard to describe.
Q: is this clay?
A: no. its glass. Really!
Q: do you paint on the details?
A: no. all the details are applied while hot sculpting the piece. Each different pattern is created with dots and canes, applied by hand. Glass can be pulled down into a spaghetti shape, or finer, until it is as thin as a hair. I use many techniques with these and other tools to create the details on my animal sculptures.
Q: what do you do with it?
A: Historically, beads have been around longer than humans have been in towns or villages. Your ancestors have made and collected and traded goats for the finest tiny artworks.
Often, I find people get it when they hold it in their hands. My work has a tactile quality that doesn't show in photos. You can hold it, and feel that deep down native in you sighing with satisfaction.
I also find art has magic, the ability to invoke the natural world we crave and need to fill the well in our souls.
I hope my work can do this for you, as it does for me, everyday. ; )
