About

Hands of Clay

I took art "lessons" during the 50's, watching "Learn to Draw with Jon Gnagy on TV" -- sketching during the ensuing years with pencil, charcoal, India ink, and felt tip marker. By the time I had become a dad, I was making wood crafts to hang on the walls of my son's and daughter's bedrooms. I'm especially proud of the 16 first, second, third place, and honorable mention ribbons my drawings and crafts have won at County Fairs.

While working as director of social services of a nursing home in 1982, I was so affected by the death of a resident, I wrote a story about him. "Lost in Thought" was my first published piece. During the 90's, I explored creative writing more fully. In addition to more poignant, personal essays, I also wrote humor and submitted my work for publication as a freelancer. One of my earliest pieces found a home in a publication with a circulation described in Writers Market as "a few close friends". Several years later, one of my essays appeared in Weight Watchers Magazine with a circulation of one million readers. What a rush!

Much more recently, I took a ceramics class through the Cherry Hill Recreation Dept. It was so much fun, when the class was over I bought 25 lbs of clay at a local art supply store. While playing with the clay one day, I created what would become my first Finger Face. I used it to entertain my 8-month old grandson, Ethan, while I fed him lunch. (Note: My shop's banner refers to my grandson's reaction "For Ceramic-Induced Smiles Since 2008".)

Early on, my shop's welcome invited visitors to take my "Ten-Second Challenge": If you didn't crack a smile at my ceramic silliness in the first ten seconds, you probably wouldn't need another ten; it was just that kind of place.

Additional policies and FAQs
I generally wait for the "muse" to strike when I'm not otherwise creating something for family or friends. If you would like to suggest a modification to something you've seen or you want to propose something altogether different, let me know. I would much prefer to create something especially to your liking. If you'd like, you can see some of the things I've made for my family and friends on my GrandpaToys Facebook Fan page. Please understand that I cannot make something for you that includes a copyrighted image. But, anything else...

One last thing (which I learned from the movies): Any similarity between my Finger Faces, Door Faces, Personal Avatars and any person, living or dead, is totally coincidental.
