Legacy and Innovation
I learned to crochet at the knee of my Great Grandmother Grace when I was 5. I would sit and crochet chain after chain while watching PBS (Are you Being Served was my favorite). She would create these giant table clothes from very thin yarn. I am still envious of her patience in making such beautiful intricate pieces that are, to this day family heirlooms.
By the time I graduated with my art degree (specializing in photography) I had forgotten and almost dismissed this legacy. I was broke. Really broke, and when the holidays came I was stumbling trying to find something to give my family and friends. I decided to crochet a hat for my aunt and my boyfriend. They were hits! I was never much of a follower and had dismissed following any patterns. When my aunt came asking for the pattern I was really proud of myself but didn't conceive that it was a marketable skill. When my boyfriends friends and coworkers started asking to buy my hats I started to realize that I may have a market.
Two years later I opened Great Grace Crochet named after my great grandmother and have never looked back. I can not imagine not making things for people. I love my customers and seeing the pictures they send of my hats is so much fun! I can only hope to keep doing what I'm doing and making, designing, photographing, marketing and loving every second of it!
